One of the cool things I was able to do in Russia was to combine “social engineering” that I later delegated to a protege, with collecting things…

like Informatze….

Fer instance, these documents are now useless, but last year were worth millions, and that’s all the Soviet Geological Surveys of what they called “Pleistocene Voda”, which were these deep drilling projects done in Crimea during the 1960s and 1970s and located large ancient water aquifers at depths below 500 meters in Crimea

drillin on these babies had a better return than in Kuwait, and with these maps, NEVER a dry spot….

Not only unpublished manuscripts from Michael Lvovitch Tsetlin, but actual freakin Soviet microfilms!!!

my first acquistion was,

Fond 89

Fond 89 is the designation for the three thousand documents (10,000 pages) submitted to the Constitutional Court of the Russian Federation for the trial of the Communist Party. This unique collection came into being as a result of President Yeltsin's decision to outlaw the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. For the trial, government prosecutors drew on a wide range of documents emanating from the highest organs of the Communist Party and the Soviet state. Covering the period 1919-1992, the documents were selected to prove that the Communist Party of the Soviet Union showed a complete disregard for human rights and international law. They constitute the most revealing collection of documents of the Soviet Union to have emerged since its collapse.

Fond 89 covers a wide range of subjects, including Stalin's purges, the creation and operation of forced labor camps, the financing of foreign communist parties, the activities of organs of internal security, such as the People's Commissariat of Internal Affairs (NKVD) and the Committee for National Security (KGB), relations with ethnic minorities in the former USSR, espionage and subversion of other governments, the USSR's role in postwar Eastern Europe, and many other topics. The documents were drawn from a variety of sources; brought together in a single collection, Fond 89 is now a distinct record group in the Russian State Archive of Contemporary History.

My goal is using modern digitization techniques, I intend to produce the first English translation of Fond89

exactly one Bitcoin's "BTC" worth of Russian Platinum from far east (last fall's price!), with silver Soviet 10 Ruble and Czarist 1/2 ruble for camparison
platinum is crazy heavy, it feels weird because it's so heavy when you pick it up...

I’m hoping that the first volume will be released next year…

survival in Russia depends on “networking”

There's an advantage of being a foreigner, because it throws people off balance when they first meet you, and an off-balance person is easy to be “directed” where you want them to be, a place to your advantage…

I attended summer school in Brooklyn, at a special Chabad College Prepartory School (for Harvard) that specialized in math

when shabat started on Friday, students were not allowed to talk to the staff
instead they used a really complex sign language that you were expected to learn on your own

turns out that this sign language was universal, and used in all the Chabad Yeshivas all over the world, even in Birobidzhan, Russia…

all I had to do was “throw a couple of signs” in the right place and watch people’s expressions to find my first contact

the rest was easy, and basically all you needed to do was set a value of what various documents are worth, and are they worth buying
plus all due diligence, bona fides, etc

this was just one of my many networks, a semi-legal one
I also had highly illegal ones, that I can't talk about without endangering someone

I'll reciprocate with a photo of my Thompson '27 A-1 'Chicago Typewriter' (never mind the colorful bedspread!)  ;D

Ya know, lots of people like to argue with us Americans over our view on guns... but when you look at what's happening right now you get a better sense of why so many of us are reluctant to give up our right to bear arms - never know who's coming after you. God bless the people of Ukraine.

I agree and told my wife this story a couple of weeks ago.

In Ukraine there were many more people volunteering to fight the terrorist Russians than there were guns to give them.

Don't know exact statistics, but I think I heard something like there are more private guns in USA than there are people.

And as a side note.  During the riots in Minnesota some of the Blacks said something like:  "You country folks, we are coming after you next."

After hearing this, one woman posted on FaceBook.

Another nice one!

Joking aside, I do keep my firearms under lock-&-key in a Diebold safe.

My Thompson submachine gun is chambered for .45 auto colt pistol and I have 30-rd sticks, 50-rd drums and 100-rd drums but at around a dollar a bullet (at the moment) I don't pull it out too often, haha.

I've wondered what some sort of war might look like in the US today, but thank God we haven't had to find out. I'm heartbroken for the Ukrainian people that they're finding out exactly what it looks like.

I thought people kept their guns under their bed.

The only person I knew who kept guns under a bed was a widowed neighbor lady who passed away a few years ago.  She had an ottoman type daybed.  The top of it lifted off the base, and it was for storage inside.  She kept a couple rifles and a shotgun in it that were her husband's.

I know folks who sleep with a gun under the pillow, on the headboard, on the nightstand or in a nightstand drawer, long guns leaning up beside the bed or by the bedroom door, etc.  But I don't recall anyone having guns under their bed.

Now I do know a good number of people who have a loaded gun in every room in the house, and often multiple guns in the same room.  And a gun in the garage, the workshop, the barn, etc.

Nothing unusual, AKM 1969 (yes more than 50 years old), modified a little: custom muzzle brake, custom pistol grip, black AK-74 forestock instead of a wooden one, spare ammo pouch on the buttstock, that’s it.

BK, most old Russian houses around Moscow don't have closets!!!
best to keep SOME loaded LONGARMS on a blanket with another on top under the  bed
in the middle of the night, you just drop off the bed, grab the blankets, pull, and voila...
2-3 seconds at most

Not to trivialize a sad situation, but I have been disappointed in the facial looks of the Ukrainian women shown on news stories as they are fleeing into other countries.

I am sure the news viewers have been saying :  "We keep hearing about the beauty of Slavic women . . . so who has been spreading that BS."

Yeah I noticed that too but I kind of also know at the same time that while I think on average there are a lot more model looking women in Ukraine compared to many western countries they are still not most of the population. In general Ukrainian women tend to come off better as most at least tend to keep in shape and bother with their look. Of course when you're fleeing for your lives my guess that is the one point where Ukrainian women put those concerns on the back burner. Add to that of course the very could winter weather and let's face it most winter gear is hardly fancy wear which Ukrainian women seem to be into a lot in warm sunny weather of course.
