Keyboard stickers
« on: September 24, 2006, 10:12:32 PM »
I found many sites offering Cyrillic keyboard stickers, but I like the set on this site the best: http://masterrussian.com/blstickers.shtml

The layout illustration shows two У keys and no Е key.  I assume this is a mistake in the illustration.  They do specify that they are laminated however, which not all sites do.  And the photo of a section of the actual decal sheet makes them look better than the only other site to show such a photo.

The problem is that I tried to email them and ask them a question and the email bounced back.  I tried all three addresses on the site and they all bounced back.  Not only is my question not answered but, if I ordered from them and there was a problem, how would I contact them?  Has anyone dealt with these people?  If so, how were they and how was the product?  They have a good price and free shipping.  If you haven't dealt with these people but have keyboard decals, where did you get them and are you satisfied with them?  Are they as good as the ones in the picture here look?

There is also this site: http://www.customkeys.com/catalog_pages/FLL_RussianCyrillic.html
Their set is more expensive with shipping, and it kinda looks cheap with the way it's on the backing and whatnot.  The other sites I found don't actually show a picture or partial picture of the decal set and some don't even explain the qualities of their set, such as if they are laminated so that the character doesn't wear off.  Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

It's been my experience (which others will likely argue) that stickers just *suck* period. Keyboards aren't that expensive and last WAYYYYY longer check here:

You can find Russian Keyboards - Cyrillic Stickers - and much, much more at the RWD Storefront.

Didn't you have a brainstorm about Russian Billiards at one time - something like; "Bigger Balls - Tighter Holes - Longer Sticks" - or something like that ?!?  :brightidea:

Dan, that was your brainstorm, I just thought of making t-shirts out of it. The store is quite professional looking. Methinks it will be a great addition to RWD!

Ken

Well, if you get those T-Shirts, we can maybe find a way to get them into the RWD Storefront.

Don't know why, but the topic of t-shirts ALWAYS reminds me of this gorgeous woman I saw walking down Kreshatyk one day with a t-shirt saying; "Some Will - Some Won't - I Might". Wonder what she meant by that???

T-shirts would not fit the Dress Code. Better develop some dark clothes with a signature logo. Dark clothes to blend in the Russian crowd, the logo to scare away the sharks.  ;D
No it is not a dog. Its really how I look.  ;)

Strange how that "shark" metaphor was introduced in two separate and unrelated topics.

Jet:  I've seen several Russian Cyrillic keyboards, however, they all use the standard Russian key layout.  I'm using the phonetic or homophonic layout.  Learning Russian is difficult enough, I just don't want to waste time and effort learning a new keyboard.  Besides, I have to move my ginormous desk just to plug a new keyboard in the back of my minitower.  And I like my Vaio keyboard.

That brings me to another question.  My keyboard is black.  Some sites say red letter decals are better for black, others say yellow is.  How would you guys weigh in on that?  And are you guys satisfied with the quality and resistance to wear and tear of your decals?  Which ones did you get?

Dan, thanks for the tip.  I didn't even think of that.  They are very cheap there too.  Which seller should I get them from?  Are they all selling the same set (other than color, obviously)?  Any difference between the $1.99, $2.15, and $4.95 sets?  Should I get a set that specifies that it's for desktop keyboards or one that says it can be used for Desktops or Laptops?

My keyboard has the finger placement bumps on the bottom edge of the F and J keys. Every keyboard has either that or bumps in the middle of those keys or the D and K keys.  As for the dash-like bumps at the bottom edge like mine has, has anyone had trouble applying a decal because of this?  Do these labels really last as long as they say they do?

Thanks for all the feedback guys.  I just want to make sure that if I'm modifying my keyboard I do it right so I don't regret it later.

I purchased a set of the stickers for a keyboard when my wife first arrived in 2001 and they are still fine today. We purchased a set of red stickers for a black keyboard, and they are fine - but I don't have a yellow set to compare/contrast.

The little bumps on the keys will not make any difference. The stickers are not placed perfectly - no matter how much time you take to position them correctly.

BTW - we also have a Russian Keyboard much like the Keytronic you find on the Storefront page. Positioning of the Cyrillic is perfect and will last even longer than the stickers, IMO. I tend to agree with Jet that the Russian keyboard is a better choice - but it is more costly.

Over the years we have imported at least 10-12 Russian/English keyboards for friends at very little cost to them.  Next time one of your buddies goes to Russia or Ukraine, have him get you a keyboard on the way back, they only cost about $10 bucks over there,,, no big deal...

We've bought two sets of the stickers from Sergey's business. One set was about 2 1/2 years ago and they as still going strong. Black keys with the Russian/Ukrainian characters in red. Haven't tried the yellow ones so can't say if they would be better or not.

Ken

P.S. Sergey, why don't you put a link to your site in the "Top Sites" section then you can just tell folks to go there to get to your sites. Advertising your services in the threads (even when it is entirely on topic) comes off to many as too self-promoting. Just a thought.
