We stayed at the Sacha Lodge.  It's a great place for those who want to get TOTALLY away from civilization.  Your cell phone won't work there, unless you climb the observation tower on the lodge grounds.  Then you might get one bar.

It's a great place if you like bird watching.

But the truth is, we were both bored to death after 3 days, so we returned to Quito.  The trip was worth it, and I recommend it to others.  Here's more information on Sacha.

I think 3 days is enough for most people  :)

The next day we made our way back to Quito, by boat and plane.  We crashed there, back at our headquarters hotel, Four Points Sheraton. It was nice being clean again, and having a shopping mall two blocks away.

But then adventure beckoned again, this time to the top of the mountains, just east of the city.

Our next stop was Papallacta village, which  is located some 67 km from Quito on top of the Andes peaks that overlook the city.

We were following Meg Ryan again...more of Proof of Life was filmed on the road to Papallata.

Papallacta village is actually a rustic town and has not been well developed for tourism. We stayed at Hotel Resort Termas de Papallacta, and had our own private hot thermal pools.  The water temperature was very hot-- 60 degrees C.

Public hot tubs were located at the Termas de Papallacta Hot Springs (located just a 100 meters above our Hotel Resort Termas de Papallacta.

We had a rustic hut to stay in, and lots of country to explore.  I'll post some pics in the next frame.

Words can hardly describe the beauty we found, 3 miles above the city, surrounded by volcanoes and hot, hot water.  I'll let the pictures speak for me...

Our time was over.  I had to get back to work, and make up for all the time I had missed since meeting this girl.

And so I put her on the plane to Moscow, kissed and waved goodbye, and wondered if I would ever see her again.

I would~but that's another story, and perhaps another trip report.

BTW~I did not go home alone.  Despite not drinking the water, or the ice, or eating uncooked veggies, a "little friend" was growing inside of me.  He was to give me hell for some time.

Wonderful photos - I have been to most of the same places many moons ago.  Brings back good memories.  I like how your faces are covered as members of the Shining Path.

Did you urinate in the water?  Please tell me that you did not land a candirú.  I have heard tales of such, and thought it was an urban legend.  However, a PhD scientist in Peru told me it is true but extremely rare.

I remember when I lived in Ecuador I would take a stool sample to the lab every couple of months, get the results, take them to the clinic and get the appropriate medicine.  It was pretty much an endless cycle.  As long as you stayed on top of it, you were okay.  My experiences were pretty much limited to giardia and enteroamoeba, though I had several acquaintenances who were sharing their meals with their long stringy friends.  Still, the scenery there is incredible, and even your great pictures don't do it justice.

It's true you should not swim nude in the Amazon and you should certainly not pee!  Because if you do, a small candirú might swim up your penis and "set up shop!"

In my case, I landed a parsite.  It took two treatments to finally kill it!  Terrible.

You are correct Scott.  Ecuador is one of the most beautiful places in the world.

Just don't drink the water  :)

What service are you using to book flights from Russia to the Caribbean and South America?

When I was doing my research on the Caribbean I could not get seem to get any flights on Kayak that did not transit the USA.

The best I found was the non stop Aeroflot flight to Cuba with some flights from Cuba to other destinations.    Air France is another option.  They did not seem to come up on Kayak for me but if you go to thier webiste they have some flights through Paris or Madrid.
