If it makes you feel any better, I traded today for a near new 4X4 Chevy Suburban/w all the whistles and bells, and had to write a check for just $13,000.  I have a personal problem justifying that first years deprecation, so I always buy last years model with a few miles on the clock.  Saves me a lot of dough in the long run.

But can't you write off 100% of those big gas hogs?

It's free...or at least you get Uncle Sam to pay for it by paying $30,000 less tax that year...

I love this mentality  ::)
Rule #1 You have to make the money first, then you can think about deductions
Rule #2 30,000 dollars less taxable income is not equal to 30,000 tax free dollars, it will almost invariably be less than half
Rule #3 Folks who are self employed pay self employment tax over and above regular income tax, and that can eat your lunch QUICK!

You are right Jet but still if you need a truck and have the income it can cut your taxes a lot and being self employed it can save you even more since it reduces your income before the self employment taxes.   I did a 1099 myself for a lot of years but have been subchaper S for the last 10 years.

Jet,

You seem to think the way I do.  Tax deducts never seem to get me full credit for anything.  I think it's foolish to spend money thinking it will save me money.

Of course, my buying an expensive 4X4 will now put the "jb kiss of death" on Kansas farmers getting any more snow or rain for a long time.  There will be dry ground and fair weather from now on.

Jet, of course it depends on your income and how much tax you paid.  In my case in 2006, I did pay more tax than that, so it would have been savings from money sent to Uncle Sam.

For others, don't ignore ways to minimaxe taxes.  Why send your money to Washington?  Instead, give some of it to charity or church or invest in tax free bonds.

You are correct, Turbo.  I have done that several times through my business.  I usually got the government to pay for HALF my truck through tax savings.  So, if you NEED the truck, why not?

It was 93 degrees today where I will be next week.  I guess I don't have to pack my snow shovel.  I am not envying jb at all with the weather he has had to put up with.  Hopefully the new wheels come with a good heater.

M/A,

That sure looks like home.  Padre Island???  If so, that's just a few miles from my house in Corpus Christi.

Speaking of which, the wife tells me that winter has finally come to South Texas, temps are in the 40's, lots of rain lately, and generally crappy conditions.  I told her to cheer up, it'll be beach weather in a month.  Not so in Kansas.

According to a quick google search for the markings on the side of the unit in pic #2 they are similar machines to what jb is using:

Yes, Jet, they are the same machine, just a different mfg.  The device which delivers the "punch" is called a "frequency controlable hydraulic mass reaction motor".   They are used to insert only those frequencies which are compatible with mother earth, i.e., typically a swept set of frequencies in multiple octave componets between 10 - 256 htz.

Even closer, JB....we spent New Years on Padre Island, but that afternoon cut across to Mustang Island and were driving down the beach for about 5 miles when we saw the machines....they reminded me of your trip report so I took some pics for you  ;D

There will be a little relief in KS tonight, my RW will be jetting her way to Colorado Springs this afternoon, I will be picking her up at the airport at 4:00.  Even better, she will be bringing gifts,,, vodka and caviar from Russia, and that new Nikon D-80 I've been wanting.  Yes, jb has finally decided to jump into the digital age of photography.  The quality of pictures I post here should improve a little.

She called yesterday afternoon, I don't know who is more excited.   Me to see her, or her to see the new Chevy Suburban,,, I guess I'd better wash it before I leave to get her.

Nice!

Good to hear your wife is on her way home. I guess (and HOPE) we won't be seeing you around for a few days!

Cheers,
