The Angolan student was attacked by several people in a subway station Sunday night. The 26-year-old was hospitalized with head injuries and knife wounds, said Desire Deffo, deputy head of the African Union in St. Petersburg. The student was in satisfactory condition Monday.

Deffo said the Angolan student reported that the assailants looked like skinheads, and the Interfax news agency reported that at least two people were detained.

A fifth-year medical student from Bangladesh was attacked Saturday by a group of people near a subway station in the north of the city. Mozibul Haque, the head of the Bangladeshi community in St. Petersburg, said the student was hospitalized with head wounds.

Also Saturday, a group of unknown people beat a Chinese student from the St. Petersburg Music Conservatory on the city's main avenue, Nevsky Prospect. The student was also hospitalized with head wounds, Interfax said.

No one answered the phones at the police department Monday.

Deffo said racial attacks had become more frequent in St. Petersburg in recent months, leaving foreigners afraid to walk the streets. He blamed inaction by law enforcement agencies.

"Many attackers remain without punishment and feel they can keep doing it," he said.

Racist attacks on Jews, dark-skinned foreigners and people from Russia's North Caucasus have become increasingly frequent in Russia's big cities, reflecting a rise in xenophobia and racism. Non-government experts estimate about 50,000 skinheads are active in Russia.

It's the reaction on changes (which are FAR from improving as some of you try to prove us) of not well educated youth who now see nothing good in future for that and try to find who to blame.  It's the resut of absoulutely absent of any hint at national politic from our democratic government. It's the result of flood big Russian cities with illegial immigrants with their culture, traditions and crimes (after they threw Russian population out from their own republics under silence and inertia of our Government. And so far

People with race rejudice exist everywhere. There are many of them in The States, by the way. About people from Caucasian Repiblics and Asian Republics (ex parts of the USSR) - sometimes they act aka animals. You do not have Russian TV channels there. So you judge the events according to what you read. We judge internatiomal events coz we have different TV channels here (I watch Euronews). But OUR Russian children do not bring pistols andd other weapon at school to shoot somebody. And Russian women do not kill their children - I have seen one criminal reportage in TV news that one American women killed her kids coz her NEW BOYFRIEND hated them.

Thanks Elen. Your answer is an honest one. I know you opened a topic about what is wrong with Americans, and many here from the States tried to give an answer. It is easy for us to know what are problems are in our own country, and I did not know if racism was becoming as big as it is here. It hard to get a perspective of both the positives and negatives of a country without the perspective of someone who actually lives in that country.

It isn't fair to compare widespread violence that isn't stopped by
your police, with isolated cases of school violence here. There is public outrage here about school violence, and the police jump in as soon as possible to stop it. How are your police reacting to the racial violence? I hope for your sake, that they are doing something.
School violence is not widespread here.  (yet?) One crazy
mother killed her kids. How many millions of people? On the other hand, if you have one large group of ethnic people hating another
group there will be cracks in the foundation of the entire society.    Doug

how much do you think it widespread here? I think we are more save at our streets with our damn policy here  than you there in some "black" residential area

When I was in Kiev I felt totally safe. I walked through many different parts of town, with friends from Kiev, and never did I feel threatened. Kiev has around 4 million people, and I suppose it I wanted to "look" for trouble I could find it. However, if I walked the streets of Watts in Los Angeles at night with friends, I'm sure trouble would have found me. I probably would not be alive. No police would be there to help me, because even they fear going into that area.  There is crime in every city, but at least in Kiev, it is to a much lesser extent than in cities of the US that are similar in size of Kiev. Perhaps in 10 years crime will be getting as bad as in US, but right now, I would feel safe in most Eastern European cities.
