Short TR: Brighton Beach
« on: January 07, 2007, 08:37:04 AM »
Yesterday my fiancée and I took a trip to Brighton Beach. In the NYC area, we're currently experiencing the most bizarrely warm Winter on record. It was warm and sunny, 70+ degrees. I wore jeans and no coat, but a few times I cussed myself for not wearing shorts. We were both shaking our heads constantly - there were children swimming in the ocean, the beach and boardwalk were crowded. And it’s January, man! So strange...

Anyway, my fiancée absolutely loved it. I’d forewarned her that the area was a bit run down but it didn’t bother her in the least. She was so happy to be among Russian-speaking people and shops with Russian-language signs. We walked along the beach and then had lunch at a beachfront café called Tatiana's. The service was abysmal but the food was great. (I guess some things never change!) I felt as if I were back in Moscow, the Russian/Ukrainian people were so distinct and recognizable among NYC’s general population. We saw unbelievably beautiful women dressed to the nines, pseudo-hip young men wearing sunglasses and shiny tracksuits and barking into cell phones, babushkas bundled up like it was -20c, and many children.

We bought some books at a Russian-language bookstore, sat on the beach some more and watched the sun set, browsed some local shops and then headed home. All in all, it was one of our very best days together. Brighton is the perfect antidote if your girl is a bit homesick, and I’m guessing it's not a bad place to hang out if you’re single and looking for a Russian girl.

Sunday. Not as warm, but still nice.

Tom Hanks in Castaway: You never know what the tide may bring in.
Viking: But you still need to walk along the beach to find it.

 groovlstk,

Short but sweet T/R, Although I have never been to Brighton Beach, I can relate. In San Francisco we have a street (Geary) that is known to be Russian/Ukrainian territory, with many storefronts and signs displayed in Russian.

Nataly and I have been to San Francisco many times, but this was a very welcome discovery for her, and me too. She was smiling ear to ear seeing all of "her people" walking about, and then going into the shops and picking up some pelmini and sour cream. We stopped in the Orthodox Church too with many babushka's present of course. It was a great day for us too, and something she really needed, sometimes I forget how lonely it must be to be so far from "home".

She went there again today with her Ukrainain girlfriend to celebrate their Christmas. Even though it's not a huge holiday like New Year, it's still a time to miss family, and her people. I bet when she gets home tonight she will be a very happy girl  :)

Wow . . . time changes everything.  :o

That's not quite what Geary Street was known for back in '76 . . . lol.  Slightly embarrassing place for a young---and straight---lad to find himself on by mistake,  it was. I mean, I'm broadminded, and was then, too . . . but I was also from Idaho.   ;)

Maybe you're thinking of Castro street? I've never known Geary to be a gay area, but in the city your bound to see some gay guys no matter where you go. Doesn't bother me though, to each his own, besides SF is one of the most beautiful cities in the world, having a large population of designers and interior decorators probably contributes to that  ;)

A quick little story about San Fran that actually involves RW too.  (I don't think Groov will mind)

A couple of years ago I took Lena up to see the city.  One of her hot Ukrainian gf's was going to school there and we hooked up with her for dinner.  Real swanky place, don't remember the name.  We had finished dinner and the girls were chatting so I went outside to have a smoke.  I met a couple of nice guys in town from Australia.  We were getting along well ,chit chatting about the city.  The girls come out and I think, these guys are gonna think I am the biggest stud in the world having the company of two fine RW.  Well, they could have cared less and kept giving me all the attention.  One even brushed some lint off my sweater!  That is when this naive midwesterner finally got the true picture!  Duh!

In the car the girls were busting my chops pretty good.  They said "what the hell?  We walk out and you hog all the cute guys to yourself! :o :o :o :o

Ken, you were a stud to those guys.

I/O, San Fransisco is known for the large amount of Homos there. I'm not surprised KenC was getting attention from guys in that city.

Why do you think I live so close?  It definitely is a place that grows on you.  The only good looking girls that get on the Subway pretty much end after Sheepshed Bay.  Wife feels very at home.  All the foods of the FSU are available, and usually better quality, but you pay through the nose for some of them.

I spent part of Saturday and Sunday hustling the inlaws to Manhattan to see it.  All they like at all is Central Park and the upper east side, though they also seemed to like the vibrancy of SoHo.  When we drove through the west village they saw some girls holding hands and I explained that it was a gay section.  The reponse I heard from FIL was worse then ------- (you fill in the blanks).

I had visions of Brighton Beach as being a resort town such as Wildwood or Atlantic City in New Jersey. It is just an ordinary, small town close to the beach. I happen to like beaches so I enjoyed it. We went in October of 2005 and it was a little chilly then. I am starting to see the Greenhouse effect in Baltimore with rain almost every day in the last week and higher than normal temperatures. Forty years ago this would have been snow.

Speaking of 'greenhouse effect' or Global Warming as it's better known, lets see... it's warm as Spring in New York and Baltimore, today in Nor Cali it's about 65 F, which is unusual too, and a couple guys currently on trips in Tver and St. Pete are also commenting on the warmer than usual weather, it's strange, but it's really happening.

The good news is that the girls in the FSU can wear those mini skirts a few months longer now!  ;D

We're having the coldest Christmas I can remember downunder...  then again there's usually so many parties I rarely remember anything about Christmas anyway!   ;)

Seriously though... we've had an incredibly cool summer this year though the experts have come out and said it is NOT related to global warming.

I know this sounds BIZZARE but I hope it gets a bit colder in Ukraine before I get there... at the moment it looks only marginally colder than some winters I've had in New Zealand!   :-\
