A month ago, Larisa recommended a movie called 'Office Affair'.
I haven't seen it, yet.
She likes Gone With The Wind. I sometimes call her 'Scarlet'
and she calls me 'Rhett'.

I also really like the recent movie, 'Two Brothers and a Bride',
about two brothers living on a farm, who go to St. Petersburg to find a
house-maid (wife) who can cook and clean for them, since their
mother died. The plot revolves around a 'romance tour'.
A very well-written and acted movie.

'Solaris' was re-made with
George Clooney. The original Russian version is excellent.
Awesome abstract soundtrack and gorgeous photography.
Directed by Tarkovsky http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0069293/

My gf Nadia translated for Nataliya Bondarchuk (Hari in the original Solyaris) just two days ago in a film festival in Chelyabinsk.

Claim to fame!

Elena's favorite movie is Moscvo Ne Slezem Verit (Moscow Doesn't Believe In Tears). I really enjoyed it also. Does anyone know of a good place here to get DVD's or VHS that will play on the standard US machine? Especially with English subtitles so I can have a bit of a clue to what is going on.

I loved Moscow on the Hudson, with Robin (not Robbie!) Williams, I thought it was a perfect East Vs West tragi-comedy but Nadia didn't like it at all.

Still worth checking out.

I liked all the 'Brat' movies and also 'Syostri' which I totally watched with no subtitles cos I couldn't find them. Of course they were there....

Pokrovskiy Gates is a seminal Russian New Year movie, UK equiv is the Great Escape which we get from the BBC every year....

I have 12 DVD's of Russian movies here to watch and I'm 11 behind.....

I love Pokrovsky gates! And also Solaris, Burnt by the Sun, and Moscow Doesn't Believe in Tears. BTW Catzenmouse, its 'Moskva slezam ne verit'!

Ste, have your DVDs got English subtitles? If yes, did you get them on amazon? I have plenty of videos I brought back from Russia, but they haven't got subtitles and I have to translate films to Mark when we watch them - not much fun for me!

no - I got mine from russia, Nadia is so careful cos it says English subs on case but it's possible it's not in reality. She's always right....

II bought four submarine DVD's on one dual sided DVD Rus/Eng, nadia warned me but I bought it....

result - no Eng subtitles!! she always gets them to test every one!

I gotta a thing about submarine movies!

But thanks to nadia holding me back i have 90% RUS DVD;s with ENG subs - if u want I can copy!! The other 10% is me being clever or trying to be!

Thank you Ste, its very kind of you!:D

What did you think of subtitles for Brat-1? I don't know may be we have a pirate copy, but subtitles on it just crap - doesn't make any sense whatsoever!

Ken we have a VHS copy, but PAL format, so it won't play on our dated deck. We recently picked up a nice little DVD player at Best Buy that handles PAL and NTSC formats as well. There're dealers on eBay selling DVDs, VHS - many titles available, some subtitled.

Yes I noticed same! Words not matching dialogue - I will mention to Nadia now - she has just returned from Chelyabinsk Film Festival - 6:30 am tut-tut!!

Nadia has Russian Simpsons where Homer has his his 'Brains' fried, Russian over-dub has it as Homer saying 'I got my Brian's fried" - no sense at all...

Hehe

Calling chel now- weird time!

I got my copy of Moscow Doesn't Believe In Tears at a bookstore
called 'Borders'.         Amazon.com has it for about $27.

Photo Guy,  Yes, Ebay,  They don't have a ton with subtitles but they do have some.  I have bought about 7 so far.    If I came up with any spare time I could copy the ones I have and send them to you.  Of course I guess that isn't legal so perhaps I shouldn't do that.  I would hate to spend 20 years in the slammer.

Just go to Ebay and do a search in movies for Russian and Subtitles or Russian and english.   There is a place I think in Arizona, Tuscon I believe that specializes in them.  It is Kiev Video.  They have a store if you are ever in Tuscon.   They have a lot of them on Ebay.   There are 16 movies right now in Russian with English Subtitles starting at about $ 4.95 plus shipping.

Vaughn,

Thanks for the link. What model did you get at Best Buy? I'll check it out there first as we have one down the road a bit from us.

P.S. It was good chatting with you the other day! Look forward to getting together sometime in the future.

Ken, it's an off-brand called CyberHome, about $45.
We didn't really care about brand, but PAL capability.
I'll call you as we swing up the coast past Richmond.

Hey there Vaughn,

Thanks much for the info. When will you be coming up the 95 corridor? We'll be heading to Norfolk Thursay evening for a "Biometrics" appointment on Friday morning but other than that we'll be home. Hope we get a chance to hook up either on the up or the back trip for you.
