That's one of the restored colour photos taken by Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii. The original site is called "The Empire that was called Russia" and is located at http://www.loc.gov/exhibits/empire/ - It's well worth a visit!
The camera was actually composed of three cameras, which had glass plate negatives, each camera took a gray photo using a coloured lens (blue, red and green) - and the negatives are used together to create a colour photo.

He took more than 3500 colour negatives, and 122 of them were restored for the Library of Congress exhibition in 2000.

Even on DSL, that took an insanely long time to load!

But it was well worth the wait.  Amazing.

I have cable. The download was less than 2 seconds. Almost instant. You have a good connection?

The photos are outstanding!! You would think they were taken with a 10 meg digital.

Viking: But you still need to walk along the beach to find it.

DSL and an iMac, Viking, it's usually pretty quick.  But big images take time, and unlike cable . . . sometimes with DSL you have to wait your turn.  ::)

Really, though, it was probably only a minute.  In the old dialup days my box would've locked right up!

Ahhhh... contention ratios!

Amazing how a 1.5 meg DSL connection is only as fast as a 256k connection in peak times AND they still charge you for 1.5Meg!

The first photo Ste has shown looks like it could be a present day Russian small village. Once you get far away from the big cities, this could pass for a present day village.

It crossed my mind to ask if they have present-day pictures to compare them. I am sure that in the less populated areas you might not see a lot of change.
No it is not a dog. Its really how I look.  ;)

I'd expect the only differences in the small villages now days would be the presence of a McDonalds... but only if it is big enough!
