How do you rate looks on 10-scale?
« on: March 01, 2007, 10:32:22 PM »
Hi everyone,

I am new here and could say that this forum is extremely exciting to read!  :)

I am curious about one thing. Often here, one can read the beauty ratings like 'she is an 8', or ' she is rather 6', or something like that. It's not the first time when I come across this mysterious rating.

After reading one topic, I visited the www.hotornot.com and hotornot.de, but they apparently just make such ratings and no explanations how to vote..

Could you please tell how do you use this 10-points-scale? for expample, how do you tell one is 7 or 9? and I guess there would be even a more subtle difference between 6 and 7?

Hello LilyNewbie

Welcome to RWD! I think one thing you will find here is differences of opinions, no matter what subject. And a rating on a womans looks can be very subjective. There are no hard and fast rules. There are no standards. Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and what brought you here?
Tom Hanks in Castaway: You never know what the tide may bring in.
Viking: But you still need to walk along the beach to find it.

Well the scale is an individual thing.
So a 5 for one can be a 6 or higher for another or vice versa.
Also the rating changes depending on the competition etc.

LilyNewbie,

You're out of luck because I'm not available. I do find your first post rather strange as if you're trying to advertise a dating site. Time will tell if you're here to stay and participate since you say this site is so exciting or if you're just advertising a dating site.

Hmm...

Let's see...  Lily...  I have a story for you:

My ex - wife asked me this one time.  She asked me to judge the woman walking by and tell her their rating on a scale from 1 - 10.  At the time we lived in Vegas and we were at a fancy casino with many beautiful women around.

I told her very well...  I would oblige.

First woman walks by - I tell my ex "2"  My ex looks at me and says...  "but she should rate higher...  she is georgeous!"

Next woman walks by - I tell my ex "4"  My ex looks bewildered.  The girl was SMOKING hot!

Third woman - I am nearly sweating she is SO HOT...  so I tell my ex - "6"

Now my ex calls my bluff...  or thinks she is calling it.
She asks me YOUR question:
Could you please tell how do you use this 10-points-scale? for expample, how do you tell one is 7 or 9? and I guess there would be even a more subtle difference between 6 and 7?
Almost verbatim.

I explain to her:

"Darling" I said.  "I use the budweiser scale"  (confused look on her face.)  I proceed:  "I try to imagine how many clydesdales it will take to pull that woman off me!"

Hehe...

LMAO

- Dave

PS  Just having a bit of fun with this one.  ;)

El Rock doesn't think so.

Back to the original question, it is all personal preference.  Some guys like one look others find another to be attractive.   A long time ago there was a movie with by the name "10" with Bo Derek.   Personally I would not have given her more than a 7 because she was just not my type.   That probably worked out well because I am sure I was not her type either.   I will admit the opening scene with her coming out of the water did temporarily rate her a little higher for me.

Incidentally 10 is usually considered virtually unachievable.

Welcome to RWD.

Well just post a bigger picture to evaluate better, while you have a pretty high rate in my scale ;D

For me it is a two part evaluation method. First the face and then the body. A woman can be extremely beautiful but only bones :o
Or has a great body but is ugly.

Turbo of course there are 10 's out there. You are more picky then me :D

Hi Lily.  I will try to give you some answers.

First, as others have stated, the scoring is very subjective.  A woman who is scored as a 7 by one guy may be scored a 9 by another guy.  This is due to two factors a) different guys are looking for various things and b) different guys have different absolute scalings.  For instance one guy will rate several women as 10s while another guy may say he has never really seen a 10 even though they both associate with mostly the same group of women.

However, despite the differences in actual scores for the same woman, most guys will rank various women in roughly the same order.  Very rarely will woman X be given a score significantly higher than woman Y by one man, and another man gives woman Y a significantly higher score than he gives to woman X.

Second, the scores given to women are skewed to the higher end.  On a 1 - 10 scale, we would think that 5 is about average and that the majority of women should be rated somewhere around 4-6.  However, in practice, an average looking woman is generally scored as around 7.  This is very much like Olympic skating and gymnastics scoring where the scores are grouped closely at the top end of the scale.

And for the guys here, why can't you just give some answers to questions asked rather than slobbering all over the females or wondering about who is or is not trolling, etc.?

And adding to jb's comment. Recently I talked with a RW who has lived in America for 20 years. In conversation I mentioned Clydesdales and she had no idea what they were. I doubt if she would have made a Budweiser connection either.

Hi again Lily,

I agree that '10's'  are perfect women- a perfect score.
In real life, a gorgeous woman with a great personality would
score a 9.5. (personality does affect my view of surface beauty,
just as a smiling woman appears more beautiful than a woman
who does not smile much)

I would rate most women on magazine covers as an 8 or 9.
Those women might be 7's. It is hard to tell because photos
are usually enhanced digitally with software like Photoshop.

A '5' is borderline attractive and may fall into the category of
'attractive' if she has a great personality.

Usually I find it easiest to approach a woman who is a 7 or 8,
because I feel that there is less at risk than approaching
and interacting with a '9'. As I get older I find it easier and
easier to flirt with those rare 9's that we may come across
in everyday life, as opposed to the 9 women in photos.
Beautiful women in the US can be real snobs and are often
victims of their own beauty- They have become spoiled and
bratty at an early age.  Many beautiful RW are not
as internally tainted.

Based on your tiny photo, I would rate you as an 8 or higher.
That's just a matter of personal taste. Another guy might
see you as a 9 or 7.

Any unusual physical features would probably lower the score.
For example, a huge nose or ultra short neck, etc.
Nice 'proportions' usually raise the score. Some guys focus
more on her derriere, others on her breasts, or maybe her legs, etc.

I am not currently looking for a much younger woman, but in
your case I would make an exception and gladly correspond as
a goodwill gesture from the RWD membership. <grin>   -doug
