WHere can I find a pair of black Russian-style long pointed-toed dress shoes here in the USA?

They are so hard to find here in the states.  Otherwise, I'd have to travel to FSU and buy one of those shoes.

Lil likes to shop for pointy (and not) shoes here:

(check womens>shoes>dress)

and here (she especially likes the cash back rewards program here  ;D)

Olga like Lil also shops at DSW thanks to Jet telling me where to take Olga for her shoes.  They also have a good quality mens shoes .  The points are also a great bonus.  Olga loves her shoes and purses. Olga gets a coupon for $10.00 to $20.00 once a month in the mail since we joined.

Thanks for the websites...  I am just buying a pair for myself, and it's good to know where to go when any RW want to know to buy pointy shoes.

I like both red and black.  Just in my personal taste... I like the way how they melt in my mouth.  There's no big difference.  I just like the color.  for Red, I like Salmon.. for black, I like Russian Oestra the best.

My favorite is.. caviars on Russian blini with sweet butter or smetana

Welcome, olena;

Finding decent bread is sometimes difficult, I don't know where you settled in whatever country you landed in, but most cities in the US have at least one or two or a few bakery shops with handmade bread for sale.  Good bread is available in our local supermarket, (they have a bake shop), but it tends to be higher priced than the mass produced brands.

Welcome to RWD Olena...

Bread... ahhhh bread.

My Step Father was Latvian and I spent almost my whole childhood liisten to him complain about the bread in Australia.  At the time all I really understood was that he thought it was too moist and "doughy" but it never clicked until I tasted the bread in Riga and in Ukraine. There's a DEFINITE difference.

Of course it's possible to find similar loaves here but you really have to look.  I find anything sold in a supermarket is "gooey" like he used to say, and it's definitely something I'll be thinking of when "My Girl" arrives.

Olena,  it'd be nice for us all if you went to the "Introductions and Icebreaker Section" to tell us all a little about yourself.  New members are always welcome at RWD and I know we all appreciate the opinions of ladies who have vastly more experience than us.

Good luck on the search for good bread!   ;D

Guys,  there's been some interesting comments in here. Thank you...

My Girl has lived in Germany for a few years so she has experienced language barriers, cultural differences and foreign financial systems, etc.  She's also lived away from her family for almost 3 years now and only sees them on special occassions.

In our conversation she was saying she will enjoy cooking Ukrainian (and Russian) foods for our friends and family and she's looking forward to Australian seafood and fruits.  The thing she couldn't find in Germany was the Smoked fish.. well at least the type she has at home.

I think she'll do fine with the food but still I'd like to try to find sweets and treats she's used to at home.  I've fond a place on the Gold Coast (about an hour from me) called Russian Delight that seems to have a wide range of Russian foods and sweets and I'll definitely be trying out I/O's suggestion because it's only a hop-skip-and a jump from my home.

The thing that really got me thinking was remembering back to her birthday dinner.  We were together in Kiev and I had planned to take her to a nice restaurant for a romantic dinner but she wanted to stay home that night and just eat her favourite foods.  We had a salad, some smoked fish and red caviar on buttered white bread.  I thought it was a strange mix but she still talks about our "romantic night".

Oh, one other thing... clothes shopping... Hmmm... I've experienced it and I would never tell her it was a difficult day for me.  I've never seen anyone analyse the fabric and stitching like she does.  She explained she doesn't like LOTS of clothes.. just good quality clothes.  That day taught me a lot about her.  Good service in shops was met with smiles, thank yous and compliments on the shops stock.  Bad service was met with a retreating view of the back of her head as she walked out of the shop. There was no fuss... she just wouldn't spend money in a shop where she got bad service out of principle.  I liked her values and responses!

Anyway...  time for some sleep.

That is par for the course Kuna. Expect to shop for hours and come home with one or two items, if you're lucky, but usually nothing. Most guys are know what you want, go in, get it, leave types of shoppers (the exception being hardware stores where our eyes glaze over and we can wander around for quite awhile) so this type of shopping can be frustrating at times but it is another perfect chance for you to practice that patience that we're always talking about.

Think of it as training for when you get captured and tortured by the enemy. Are you tough enough to take it and not break?

If you are man enough for this then you need to step up and go clothes shopping for your lady AND your child! While she is examining every stitch, style, color, and fabric type the kid will be whining because he's bored, hungry, tired, has to pee, is thirsty, is bored some more, are we done yet, can we go home now, when are we leaving, is it time to go, bored again, hungry again, has to pee again.... take that and multiply ten times.

 Are you man enough?  ;D

Now that you are depressed I'll let you off the hook a bit. All that above is normal - but - it is a tiny price to pay for all the wonderful bonuses that come with a FSUW!

Finding decent bread is sometimes difficult,
IMO, the French baguette has few competitors world-wide. A few years ago, the Paris Town Council passed a regulation that allowed baker's shops to put boulangerie on their signs ONLY if they had their own ovens and baked their bread in-house. The smell alone of a freshly-baked baguette is simply delicious ::).

Ken, you have it all wrong.  Bringing a kid clothes shopping with you is a great way to break away from the wife's detailed search and go wandering around for the purpose of "keeping him/her entertained".  Of course you don't need to say anything about keeping yourself entertained at the same time.  Especially in a mall, you can tell her, "I'll meet you in the toy store, food court, etc. when you're finished here.  I can't wait to see what you choose for yourself".

You guys are great... I bet you'll have a camera ready too just to capture the "Oh sh!t" expression on my face.   ;D

Seriously.. the shopping day was a great day...  It was a period of intensive learning about her...  and I know there's more learning to do.

The other thing that's been really interesting is talking about our "wedding plans"... Yes yes... I have got to post an update for those that don't know how our relationship is progressing...

Anyway... she was saying that when we get married she wants a "traditional Australian wedding" and then explained she'd like to get married in a garden with kangaroos.  There's only one or two places like that in Brisbane and neither are ideal locations for weddings so I suggested we should think of something else.

Her next option was to get married with lots of flowers and balloons and butterflies.  Yes, butterflies.  I had a serious think about this but have no experience in training butterflies to hang around throughout a wedding ceremony.

We've decided on an island wedding and getting married on the beach...  under palm trees... and with a small gathering of friends and family (including her family if we can get Visas for them). The best thing is that we can incorporate a "wild touch" because the island has wild dolphins come to the shore every evening for feeding so after we do the "ring thing" we'll go down to the beach and feed the dolphins (for photos) before going back to the Villa for a cocktail party (with a Russian touch).

Of course she thought this idea was great and added, "Maybe we'll also have kangaroos and butterflies too!"   :-\

Bruno... I'm definitely not telling my girl about RWD now until AFTER the wedding...  Thank goodness she doesn't want koalas or you'd have her convinced I can arrange them too!

Kuna,

How about getting the kangaroos to ride the dolphins while the butterflies circle around them? Send me her address and I'll send her All Kinds Of Great Ideas! No, no, don't thank me. Happy to help out... ;D

P. S. Bruno, what's up with the "bandwith" image?

OK Ken,  you're really not being helpful now.  I'd intended on offering an open invitation to the wedding all RWD members who don't have the first name of "El" but now I'll be forced to start referring to you as "El Catzenmouse".   ;D

How about this (actually On Topic): Elena misses her mom's fried potatoes and Baba Klava's bread and waffles the most. And while she's visiting family this Summer I'm going to miss everything!

Hahahaha...  Humour doesn't translate well in a discussion board I see...

Hmmm... I don't know what you're thinking so I don't know if we're thinking the same things...  I could tell you some of the things I'm thinking but... ummm... ahhhh... well...  it's public board and I hate being edited!   ;D

"Traditional Aussie wedding" is a good question and I battled with the concept for a while too.  Initially I thought it had something to do with sculling a few stubbies while wearing a "Jackie How"... but after some discussion I worked out it meant "being married in nature with wild animals and fresh air all around".

We've got a way to go yet but I suspect she'll be relieved there isn't too many wild animals in our suburb!

Kuna,

CONGRATULATIONS!

Ms D seems to be a wonderful woman.  And you are obviously and jstifiably exuberant.  This progressed quicker than you had planned, which happens with a fine women.

Interesting to observe that two Aussies are not fully understanding each other.

Bruno is a professional gardener and knows plants.  There are many plants that attract butterflies.  I am certain Australia has many gardening enthusiasts, and if you search you will find butterfly gardens.  But that would require plastic dolphins, and that would be tacky.

Has Ms D seen photos of Kolas?  When she does, you will be required to add one of those.  If you do, just make sure he has had his daily ration of eucalyptus (or whatever they eat).  A friend was filming a commercial with one, and the poor thing had not been fed.  He became very irritable, even scared the piss out of couple of actors.

I/O,  Ya know... I never thought of all the kangaroos out by the prison...  That's a damn fine idea (not!)   :o

As for the wild animals at the SBH...  One of them has found a wonderful Ukrainian girl and has changed his ways.   ;)

Thank you Gator... This weekend I'll try to get around to writing out "our story" to fill in the gaps but we've lept forward and are now planning a future together that I only dreamed was possible.  She's a spectacular person and I feel incredibly fortunate to have found her. We talk before I go to bed every night, before she goes to bed every night and most days during the day at some point.  Our time differences are perfect because it means we talk when she rises, when she retires and when something happens in her day that she wants to share.
