Is this the unluckiest guy on the planet?
« on: April 30, 2005, 12:18:49 PM »
I got a new assistant four months ago. So far he has taken a month off. Some of the reasons he used not to show up for work:

Food poisoning (x2)

Cold/flu (x 2)

His wife developed a life threatening illness

He's been beaten on the head with a bat, while playing hockey

He's been mugged.

Last week he didn't show up at all because:

On Monday - he had to go to college

On Tuesday - he had to take his dog to the vet

On Wednesday - his dog had to be put down

On Thursday - his wife got so depressed, because of the dog that he couldn't leave her on her own. He said his mother would take Friday off to look after his wife.

On Friday - His mother couldn't take the day off, but she managed to book them a long weekend in Spain, to help his wife to beat her depression, so they are off.

Is this guy the unluckiest guy in the whole world or do I have to sack him?

Apparently his life is complete bad luck. So firing him will be a continuation of his bad luck, which would be quite normal for him.:P  No reason to take him out of his normal routine! :D  Just make sure the door doesn't hit him on the way out, or in his case the way in, since he never shows up anyway.

I'm the unluckest person in the world and I haven't had any of those in the past year or two. :D

If this keeps up you can expect he will only work every other day. I have met people like this. They are clueless that they are disturbing their employer's routein and causing other employees to think they can do the same thing. My guess he is less than a good worker as well.

I thought for a minute it might be someone that used to work for me but as I look at the excuses they are not creative enough.    Some of the ones I heard were the retaining wall fell over on his car.   The two lesbians who lived next door got into a knife fight and he had to go to the police station to make a statement.  .................

The best excuse I ever saw was from a young man who worked for me.  He said he needed the day off because his wife decided to get preggers that day and he wanted to be there when it happened.

I went to school with these guys.

They were the ones who would say their dog ate their homework.

Do you use a 90 day probation period? Is this unlucky gentleman on straight salary?

I had one guy I had to train on my job cos I was leaving, spent all morning showing him what to do on the PC - bear in mind this was about 1989, PC where incredibly scary things then....

Anyway, I could tell he wasn't exactly over-excited and seemed a bit overwhelmed with this but I let it go - first day nerves etc. At lunch time he sat up and announced:

"Right, I'm off now..."

So I said, 'what, u mean off to lunch"?

He says "No, I'm off, not coming back, bye...."

Oh well.

All welcome me to the board, post number one out of the way!

Welcome, Ste!:D

Nice to see you posting here as well. I hope you haven't been banned from RWG? ;)

Thanks again for the stuff you've sent me earlier, though I haven't sorted it out yet!

BTW, we have Leslie posting here - he is from Manchester as well.

Not banned no - continually going off topic isn't an offence there yet!

I'm gonna pick leslie brains when I've settled in here, actually I'm from Bolton not Manchester but get fed up explaining where Bolton is!

He might know stuff to help with our student visa thing but I'm not gonna ask if he's a United fan. No way!

You see, I follow the Whites of Bolton!

Ste,

Welcome aboard this little lifeboat in a big sea of commercialized sharks :D

Watch your toes though.. there's some minnows around here that can leave nasty marks  but don't worry they heal quickly.

Sure can't vouch for staying on topic, but I've enjoyed the content a here a whole lot more than 'elsewhere'

Hi Ste,

Good to see you posting here.

How did you ever find the place?

One thing RWD doesn't have yet is European chat but it's still growing.

Wasn't my son was it?

Sounds just like the crap he pulls & then he wonders why he has nothing & can't get anywhere, DUH!!!

Takes all kinds but this kind I find very disturbing. The future of the world depends on these morons so all I can say is I feel for the future because there may not be one. Too many young people these days are so spoiled & feel the world owes them a living rather than the other way around.

Time they woke up to the reality of the world & started to contribute rather than, ME ME ME, TAKE TAKE TAKE all the time

Rvrwind,

Looking at your picture, it is highly unlikely that it was your son because he is half Indian and half Arab!

As for the unlucky guy, he had resigned due to his 'personal problems escalating, I can't work any longer.' What a surprise was to receive a reference request from the recruitment agency one week later. Of course, I ticked all the right boxes (Would you re-employ him? NO!) He was immediately dropped by perspective employer. Oops! :D
