I have always considered myself lucky that my wife lives in Crimea.  I can't think of a better place in Ukraine to live or to be "forced" to visit regularly.  But I have to admit that your TR and photos make me want to spend some time in Dnepr.  One thing that I find interesting is that Americans go to Ukraine and then seek out places that are closer to what they can relate to at home, such as TGI Fridays, O'Brien's Pub and the MOCT center.  It seems like a pretty long flight just to search for a little piece of America.

CHANGING CITIES

We are flying to Kiev today.  We want to catch up with some old friends there, some of hers and some of mine and some mutual.

Our taxi is here early; waiting outside.  So is the man who owns the apartment.

Newbies should know that service people in Ukraine are almost always early.  Just expect it.  Frankly, I appreciate it that my taxi service allows more time to get to the airport than I think is needed.  I learned my lesson the hard way.  One time in Kiev I allowed two hours to get to the airport.  There was a traffic problem, and I made my plane with only 10 minutes to spare.  This ain't Chicago, with a flight leaving every half hour.

Respect the advice of the locals and get there on time.

I'll file more from Kiev.

Goodbye, Dnerp!

If you were here, Scott-- you would go to MOCT....that is where all the action is these days! Hot girls, short skirts, movies and bowing and Ukrainian cooking.  But I agree with you about Fridays and O'Briens....  I don't visit them in Kiev.

And hey, about two weeks ago I was dying for a burger, and had one at McDonalds!  So no one is perfect  ;D

When your wife gets to America I think you will discover the same thing in reverse as you said--"One thing that I find interesting is that Americans go to Ukraine and then seek out places that are closer to what they can relate to at home."  After Marina had been in the US about 3 months, she was dying to eat Russian food.  So we drove 40 miles to feed her :-)   And we even went to an orthodox church a few times to help her deal with culture shock.

I suspect that is exactly why an American might visit McDonalds or Fridays in the midst of the delicious food here.

Hi again, Gabrielo.  Monterrey is a beautiful place; I have been there once.

Thanks for your kind comments about the pretty woman story!   I'm still wondering if Pretty Woman was looking at me or near sighted Marina!  ;D  LOL

Marina says a big hello to you back  :D

Hi Marina :)

and Simoni

:( well sorry if the following lows yours ego to the floor or to the bottom of the sea, but I has a similar experience ( if not identical ) at University's Campus  and it  occurred as Marina told you; the beautiful girl was not looking and smiling to me but to a friend of mine because the beautiful girl was her friend too.  :-[

So I'm sure Marina's version is the true one.   :)

but you have Marina, and Marina's love so your ego always will be in the sky  :D

Ukraine is not the west.  Things operate differently here.

The know it all who overrules their guide or wife on how long to allow to get to the airport may make it a few times.  That's luck.  But eventually stubborness will bite your butt.

Such would have been the case with us today.  We are stuck in a police roadblock.  Been her for more than an hour.

But we should make it, since we allowed an hour and half more than my western sense predicted we needed.

We finally cleared the police stop.  Our 30 minute trip to the airport took 2 hours this morning.

Might have been longer without the 50 grn bribe I provided...

Scott...

To be fair Moct is unique...  Yes it's a big shopping mall but it's pretty intersting too... AND it has the best coffee I had in Denpr (at The Atrium Cafe).

There is a good Ukrainian eatery upstairs and the supermarket downstairs has a superb range of products... Don't be surprised at the price of Pine Nuts though.. them little suckers cost more than gold!

Big pluses for Moct???

- Air conditioning and lots of it...

- Several good restaurants (including Pormofino)

- Free Internet

- Clean toilets!

I agree.  The coffee at the artium cafe is great.  I had a cup or two daily as I posted this story..or until I found a better source for internet.

Best coffee in dnerp IMHO was at the Coffe Shoppe on Lenin Street.  I'm actually doing a segment on coffe, with pics, later in this TR :-)

One of the factors men should consider when seeking and FSU wife is where she lives.  Becasue you will be visiting there the rest of your life to see FIL and MIL and other family.  I'm glad Marina is from such a great city as Dnerp.  It's a very nice place to vacation.

But of course the main thing is your selecting a great wife, and not selecting her home city  ;D  LOL
Interesting thought about a ladies city and really her country. I have not thought about it is that manor.

My lady was born and raised in Tajikistan not Russia or Ukraine and after the fall of the Soviet empire Tajikistan regained its independence and forced all non ethnic Tajik people to leave which is how my lady came to live in rural Russia.

It is a good point and one I think I saw Michaelangelo raised a long time ago... Incidentally his wife is from Dnepr too...   :-\

I'm sad to say we won't be returning to Dnepr often...  While My Girl was raised there her mother moved to Moscow after she went to Germany to study...  My future BIL assures me he'll show us a good tme in Moscow though..   :D

I really love it there though... It's spectacular in Summer but unfortunately quite different in winter...

Simoni...  I didn't find the other coffee joint you mentioned... I must have tried a dozen places and Atrium was the pick of the bunch...  The next best I found was at My Girls kitchen table.. I took her a plunger and 4 kilos of my favourite beans from home because I knew she relied on her morning cup!

I'll look forward to your coffee report.   :P

So we have one member (Thor) vigorously promoting Kharkov as the best city to find a FSU wife and several members cheering for Dnepro. On the strength of the available evidence, Dnepro is winning by a margin, and the Dnepro grooms did not need a matchmaking guide to help them either :)

Better add Kiev  to the mix.  I almost married a girl from there.  And kenC and Bruce found their girls in Tver.  JB and Groove in Moscow.  BTW- I did use a matching service :-)))

Near the East bank of the Dnepr... on a very long road (as I found out when I didn't get off the bus one day)...   :cluebat:

mir,  I think there are great girls everywhere...  At the end of the day it has little to do with the city (not nothing to do with the city)...  and more to do with her character, upbringing and life experiences...  Actually, that goes for Western Women too... there are plenty of good ones who have great character, upbringing and life experiences that haven't damaged them (too much).

Kuna, are you aware that right across the street from the south side main entrance, the east side of that building has a WONDERFUL market, more selection and much, much better price that the market in the Moct.  Once you see, use this market I don't think you would shop the market in Moct.

Mir, do you know that for a fact with the grooms mentioned?

We are home now.  But I have some details of our trip I will still post.

We did get hit with a baggage overweight charge in Dnepr.  They only allow 1 23K bag per person. On internation flights and connections you are suppose to be allowed two.

About half the time we get hit with this.  Cost me 40 bucks.

Anyone have any tips or strategies?  Seems like the smaller the airport, the more likey they will have their had out...
