Russian Culture?
« on: August 01, 2007, 02:25:04 PM »
Called Nadia in Chelyabinsk last night, asked her what she would be doing, cinema, opera, ballet? Cinema she said, KinoMax in Chel, I've been there, very nice.

I imagined she'd be seeing some Tarkovsky or maybe a subtitled Bergman or maybe 'Das Leben der Anderen' in the original German to help with her languages.

So I asked, hoping I wasn't too far out of my depth, what she was going to see.

'Transformers' she said.

Freakin' Hell......

Last time we where there we watched 'Spanglish' - Can you imagine, English/Spanish film dubbed in Russian.....

I totally couldn't follow it, and declared it a rubbish. I've seen it since in the original and it's actually a great movie - with it being Hollywood u'd expect the hero to go off into the moonlight with the heroine but not in this movie.....

Was the ending different in the russian version? I'm quite prepared to believe it was, since I don't remember the sadness in the Russian version. Mind u I didn't understand it, and my russian is ok...

It's a Hollywood thing, happy endings. We Brits like true-to-life gritty kitchen-sink movies to cheer us up.

I have watched King Kong in Russian with her kids.  I knew the story from the original, and the rest was action.   A drama would be impossible because my Russian is limited to asking directions to the toilet and ordering beer, potatoes and shash lik.

On occasions with absolutely nothing else to do (she is helping kids with homework and I have washed the dishes), I have turned on the TV.  It is limited to the local TV channels.

I have watched parts of Russian movies on TV.  IMO they are more entertaining than dubbed American movies even though I can not follow either.

After about 30 minutes of this, I turn to Russian sports channel for swimming action, all-white basketball, or Russian billiards (still trying to understand the scoring).

I took nadia to play snooker in UK, table is huge compared to pool, dunno about russian billiards. 12 foot by 6.

Needless to say, I won....

I had to sit through watching Spiderman 3 in Russian. Even though I can't understand Russian too well, it was quite obvious the movie stunk in every language!

On my first trip I watched a Russian comedy on TV and thought it was "amusing" even though I didn't understand a word of it.

Aparently it's an all-time classic and is set in the 60's on an apartment construction site... Very slap-stick but light fluffy fun.

On my last trip My Girl and I were in a restaurant and there were a few TV's scattered around playing that movie.  She couldn't keep her eyes off the TV and judging by her laughter she finds it hilarious.

I forget the title...  hmmm.. Operation Something (or other)...

I've already started downloading Russian Langugae movies (shhhh).  If anyone has any suggestions I'm all ears!

Was it 'Operation Y and other Shurik's adventures? (1965)' by Leonid Gaidai?

One of my favorites is Kavkazskaia Plemianitsa...it has the same "Shurik" as a protagonist, and like the other one (I imagine, since I haven't seen it), it is pretty slapstick and visual; it wouldn't be too hard to follow the action with a bit of translation along the way.

Hmmm... As Russian comedies tend to favour a slap-stick style has anyone had any experience with their RW watching (and enjoying) Mr Bean?

English humour is one of the greatest it can be deep , gentle and on that some other different level, american humour sometimes only rolls over toilet jokes it is a little bit more plain , english humour is unique and rather bright and colourful:)

I like it how they jokingly criticise things it is really similar to russian humour at least I find it similar in so many ways

A remarkable thing about Russia is that there are some Soviet movies that has been viewed and loved virtually by every Russian person. In daily life, people often use the memorable quotes from those movies, and the counterpart is supposed to know them and the exact situation where these lines were used. I could make a top 10 list of must-see Soviet movies according to surveys made by national massmedia. 5 or 6 Gaidai Charly Chaplin style movies would definitely be on that list.
Da, da, Canada; Nyet, nyet, Soviet!

An endangered species now :(? What a pity, back in the 1970s British TV was flooded with good comedy (the Monty Pythons, the two Ronnies, Morecambe & Wise, etc.)
Milan's "Duomo"
