It is quite common to see older men with much young davuchkas or fat, ugly men with stunners.
Good advertisement for marriage agencies  :)

I don't know what they were for, most likely some restaurant of something. Why do you think they could e religious?

Well my visit to Kiev ends today.
This evening we will go by marshrutka to a village about 2 hours drive from Kiev.
Olga's mother lives there and we stay with her for two nights and on Sunday I come back and go straight from the bus station to the airport and back home.
So the next time I post it will be from UK.

Mir

There are certain religious faiths that stand on corners and pass out flyers and such ... for some reason, that thought popped into my head ...

Have a safe trip home  :)

Visit to a Ukrainian village
« Reply #55 on: August 19, 2007, 03:47:51 AM »
I made a short visit to a village about 100 km from Kiev.
I had been there once before two years ago, and little has changed since then.
In the UK we call posh suburban residential areas villages. So when one tell a person from Ukraine or Russia that I live in a village named So and So they look at you with some surprise. The reason for this will become clear when you visit a village in the Ukraine. The villages lack many of essential facilities. For some reason Ukraine's agricultural base has erroded (Over the centuries Ukraine was fought over by nations due to its agriculture and not its women). So there is hardly any employment in a village, anyone who wants to work or study has to leave the village for the city.
Olga's mother has been a teacher in this village for many years. She owns a decent sized house which in Kiev would be worth $500,000. However in the village due to the way the legal deeds are made it is unlikely she can ever sell this property. The house has a decent sized plot used for growing tomatoes, cucumbers and potatoes (the kitchen garden). She also keeps a dozen hens so she sells vegetables and eggs to supplement her income.
I wanted to post photos from this village to show the contrast from Kiev but stupidly I left my camera charger in my Kiev apartment and found out that the camera battery was exhausted.

End of the journey
« Reply #56 on: August 19, 2007, 04:01:57 AM »
The flight home was quite uneventful.

Olga came with me to the airport to see me off.

At Kiev airport some changes have been made. Previously the information board in the waiting area used to announce the check-in countres. Now it only shows check in closed, flight boarding etc. At the entrance to the area with check-in counters a new digital board has been installed that gives the numbers of check-in counters.
There was the usual queue in-front of passsport control. It takes longer to process a Ukrainian national then a foreigner. Part of the reason is that many of Ukrainians do to fill the immigration card (looks like they need one when flying overseas) before the arrive in-front of the immigration officer. Who then asks them to fill and so they stand and fill it up while everyone else in the queue waits.
After clearing the passport control there used to be two security areas where the hand lugage/personal etc. was screened. These have been abolished. So you now wait for your boarding to be announced and all security checks are made inside the relevant gate.

It has been a relaxing trip for me. A lot of uncertainties have been clarified and we can plan on the next phase of our relationship.
I will post some more about the relationship in another thread and will post some tips about travel to Kiev based on my experience later.
For now I will post some photos of the sights that are most popular here  :)
