Ste,
Exactly!
KenC

This is the funniest!

Remeber this is BBC Cricket Commentry, Radio Four, you cannot get more staid, and Brian Johnston was staid, very Old School Tie, but he lost it in this commentry, remember 'leg over' in UK slang is err, sex....

http://www.bbc.co.uk/fivelive/fungames/audio/legover.mp3

I always cry laughing at this, Kuna, Aussies everywhere will love this...

U don't need to know Cricket, it's just this posh person giggling like a schoolboy over an innuendo!

jb, thanks for jumping in the toaster oven with me.  Now pass the butter!

KenC, I loved that movie.  It had a lot of subtle and not so subtle social commentary thrown in.  I'm looking forward to spending as long with my wife as you have with yours. Maybe then I'll get it.
Ste, I don't care how many times I watch cricket, I'm just not going to get it.  Understanding RW is much simpler.
Scott,
There is a point of diminishing returns on experience too.  I am sure I have peaked and it is all down hill from here. :D

You're actually in a funny kind of position as I think about it.  Very well experienced with being married to a RW and very familiar with life in Ukraine, but a total newbie with having a RW here in the States!  I am sure that having a well established relationship with your wife will make it tremendously easier, but it still will be interesting.

I have a running joke with Lena about her cultural education of America through movies.  there are just certain movies I think people should see to understand American life.  The latest (old) movie we watched was "The Graduate."  (Did you know that Dustin Hoffman was 30 and Ann Bancroft was 35 when that was filmed?)  Other "must see films IMO: Animal House, Gone with the Wind, the Godfather, Forrest Gump, Thomas Crown Affair, Pulp Fiction, It's a Wonderful Life, Rocky and Wizard of OZ.

Lena's first movie here in America was "American Pie" and still funny to us after all these years.

KenC,
You are right, I am in a somewhat unusual position.  That's why I'm trying to soak up all the information I can from others who have been through the experience of bringing their wife to the US.  I think having spent so much time together wil lbe a definite advantage, especially since many of the lessons on patience have already been learned by both of us.  I've also gone through the experience that awaits her, that of trying to adjust to a new country and culture, so I think I can relate better to what she will be going through and try to help her avoid some of the trauma.  I'm already trying to think of things I can do to smooth the process.

American Pie must have been quite an insight to Lena about life in the US.  It offers an interesting "slice" of americana.  Has she baked an apple pie for you yet?  I found your choice of movies interesting.  I'm not sure I want her to understand the American culture that well.  :D.  Maybe I'll just start her off easy with The Jerry Springer Show.

Ken, this topic is so rich it should be a separate topic.

My wife had little experience with American movies before arriving in the US and we spend many weekday evenings watching stuff I carefully choose based on her tastes. Funny thing, last night we watched The Crying Game. The first time Forest Whitaker showed a photo of his, uhh... girlfriend, my wife calmly commented, "she's a transvestite." Before the "woman" had even made an appearance!  ::)

She likes almost all the movies we've seen; I just asked her to rank her faves and she said Cold Mountain, Vanilla Sky, and Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas.

USCFAN,  don't get your panties all in a bunch!  I just thought that you came on too strong (as you later admitted you did) in disagreeing with the opinions of others here and expecially with Serebro.  I certainly welcome your posts and opinions, but it's wise to qualify them somewhat if you find yourself in sharp disagreement with those who have more experience in a certain area.

Some earn their mantle of expertise here by the very nature that they are RW, some by way of multiple trips to or living in the FSU, others by virtue of being in a successful longterm relationship with a FSUW and still others just because they have gotten so many doses of the clue bat they have finally figured a few things out.

Hey Scott, let's get this straight ... it's BOXER BRIEFS ... mkay?  :P

I'm not looking to get into some 'board war' here. I'm actually pretty easy going most of the time. I guess I took offense to what I perceived was a condescending nature of your post. You really don't know anything about me ... well except that I have excellent taste in college football teams and yes, I have never been to the FSU.

But I didn't just wake up last week and just suddenly decide "what the hell, I'm going to Ukraine to find a wife." I've been studying this whole subject for close to a year. I also happen to work with a man from the Ukraine. I also have met several mixed couples over the last couple of months. I also talk to a couple of Russian women that live near me, and I am writing to several ladies overseas right now.

What I am trying to say is ... am I some kind of expert? No way. Do I have a lot to learn ... you bet I do! That is one reason I am here, to soak up as much as I can. But maybe do I know a little bit about some of these issues ... like I said, I talked to a couple of ladies and wrote to a couple of ladies about this topic before I posted my first reply.

Sensei asked for some thoughts and opinions. I started my post with "my .02" ... in otherwords, here's what I think, take it or leave it. He can look at my post count and read different posts from me here on this board and know my 'experience' level. I did not come out and say "I"m a expert, and you should only listen to me". I think you read more into my post than what was there.

I know I came on a little strong to Serebro and that is why I apologized. It would have been nice for her to post a little history about herself and why she feels the way she does. If I had known that before, I might have worded it different. Lord knows most of us AM are tired of the whole feminist society that we are stuck in.

I have started a few threads myself asking for advice, such as the 'clothing' thing. I have received different thoughts and in those cases it's up to me to take what advice I feel comfortable with and apply it. Sensei has that same option. The interesting part of all this was the fact that most everybody, including 2 RW, basically agreed in principle with my thoughts.

I'm all for letting this one go by the wayside as a misunderstanding. I don't want any bad feelings with anybody here.

USCFAN,
I forwarded the PM to Lena and will pinch her butt to answer you.  Excellant taste in football teams?  Gosh, I didn't know USC had a football team.  You must mean "soccer" team.

Hard to "un" do those first 48 years of living in Michigan, Dude.  As I sit here with my Tiger cap on rooting for them to spank the Yankees again)  Lena and I were up in Anahiem a few weekends ago to see "our" team play the Angels.

Thanks to talking to Lena btw ... pinch away

To be honest, I've developed a bit of a crush on the actress ... she is absolutely beautiful.

Oi :)))) really  I think sometimes it is mostly the game to always oppose my thoughts :P or anything I say   though it is sad that many of you have wrong understanding and non consideration of what other's people say , beforehand prejudice about this or that person from the start, just cos once he/she told  one thing which you could not accept as a fair statement   :P

BTW if you really think that Moscow girls are that prudish and that they do not have to pay for the rent you are wrong gaubaub, cos middle class girls sometimes have not got their own apartment, for example they have like 1 family apratment and they all live there with mom , dad, sister, brother, cat , grandpa and so on . In order to live her independent life she has to rent a flat on her own and pay the rent on her own as well.... do not think that Moscow life is easy and sugar, it is quite bitter, even though I was born in Moscow,  I never had any privillege to anything, in the contrary I have to work hard to achieve what I have.

Many village girls were much more successful than I ever was and how not suprisingly those girls from the suburbs of Moscow require far more attenion , money , to maitain all their make up and dresses than Moscow girls, as in here we use make up rather rare, some of the girls do not use it at all

so dear gaubaub take your calculator and count how many rubles per month those girls spend for jewellery and make up and underwear, Moscow girls are far more modest in this case believe me! I know many girls who are like me, who do not use make up all the time, and economy on everything to pay for University and for all those little needs like metro and bus ticket and food for lunch everyday , and meanwhile they do not look ugly or cheap!
