Beware of the word "Blunt"

Hi...

I thought of putting this in the "Questions for Russian Women" section but no doubt some of them will see it here.. and give me their feedback.. please be gentle ladies...

I just wanted to want some of the guys especially the less knowledgeable about the danger of telling you lady that something she said was "blunt"... to most of us western people the meaning of the word is "unnecessarily direct or to the point" at least thats always been my take on it... however i was informed that when translated to Russian it has one very clear meaning... "STUPID" 

I found this out the hard way in a recent chat session with my friend when i told her that "I felt her reply to a question i had asked, was rather Blunt.." (and in all honesty it was, based on my own personal context of 'Blunt' ).... however i found out the hard way that my meaning... was lost in translation... her next sentence was her last...

"thank you... good luck finding the non blunt Woman... goodbye...!"  :crackthewhip:    and she was offline in 5 seconds.... the funny thing was that i still had no idea what had gone wrong.... it wasn't until this morning that she told me i had offended her by calling her "stupid"... so i had to eat some humble pie... after i explained the usual meaning of it from an english perspective... she felt better....

I just thought i would mention this little one word "land mine" as a heads up...

 You had better get used to getting answers in this way. Ask a question and you will get a direct answer. Many in the Western world would consider it harsh or blunt but it just is the way that it is. Get a big bottle of skin thickener and forge ahead.

I like the Russian translation.
Harsh or Blunt is a cover up for people used that every answer must be politically correct and weighed for possible negative meaning towards every sould and group on Earth. Instead of blunt, use 'direct'.

and what exactly do those words mean...? there not in the russain alphabet so they must be some sort of transliteration,,,,, please don't tell it's something even worse that "stupid".... I'm already in hot water...

my worst faux pax with my wife was mispronunciation of her pet-derivative (affectionate tname)

Apparanty what i was calling her roughly translated to the name given to some sort of large
siberian moose or yak. So i'm walking round Moscow shouting this after her and shes just smiling
and shaking her head, and then the taxi driver said to her

"what hte hells wrong with your man, your a young pretty girl and you let him call you a moose"

she looked at me and ruffled my hair and smiled and told the taxi driver

"hes stupid. hes from Magedan, round there they think a moose is a good looking animal"

The taxi driver roared with laughter and swerved nearly crashing the car, she let me do it for months until she said "what is word for large animal in english". i said "cow" she said "ine ngland you should call me silly fat cow all time, because for last 3 months its what you call me in russia ok dear?"

it become apparant everyone was in on the joke except me.

I heard a story like this on some other russian board. and a western guy who was just learning the language, took his lady to a nice restraunt, with russian familys sitting all around them, and decided to order himself to impress his friend, i guess his words were loud enough for many to hear, and when he and his friend were alone later she told him that what he said in Russian was " I want to have sex with a fish...!

I have never mentioned her name in here before but this thread requires me to....

I started using the affectionate term for My Girl's name (or so I thought) but never knew I was actually saying things like:

"Good morning my spoon".

"Ah, spoon, you're so funny".

"Spoon, come here and look at this".

"Would my spoon like to go to a movie tomorrow?"

It didn't take her long to tell me to stop referring to her as cutlery though!   

Who would have thought an ending like "XXXX-oshka could be so different to pronouncing it "XXXX-ochka"!

But wait... there's more...  My ex (my Aussie 4 year fling) was nicknamed Spoon by her family as a child (a play on words from her name) so there's no way I want to refer to "The Wonderful One" as Spoon.

My friend has subsequently told me that "blunt" has more than one meaning in Russian as well, and can also be used to mean "direct" but it is more commonly used to mean "stupid",,, that is why when i used it,,, it brought on her "rather hasty departure" from our conversation...

we have cleared up the confusion now, and it is frequently used by us both to tease the other, usually followed by a ..

but when it happened she basicly said "get lost jerk" and was gone....  which left me thinking....."What just happened...? Did i say something wrong..?"   :noidea:

Yeah Blunt Can be translated as how Nat told, but when people just do not have enough knowledge of English language that's it, and you gotta understand those girls and be patient with them and actually not only those girls who know English a little can understand Blunt as stupid, someone who deals with English for a long time can suddenly switch into Russian offensive mood and understand it as something negative,

as for me I always  understood the word Blunt as somebody who  is ignorant of this or that question at this moment of time, Ignorant also means  not always something very negative, it means that  person just do not know some details and things about this or that question in particular but that does not mean he is stupid or bad or something, the same as Blunt it is like empty , like without any particular knowledge about what he/she is talking about , that 's it,
In Russian -English dictionary Blunt means stupid yes, this is one of the meaning, but in English language mostly it all depends on the context of the speech pattern.

Hey, it works both ways.  Yesterday my wife and I were shopping and somwtimes whenever she wanted me to give her something to see or to hold things so I could try something on she would say, "dai" - sometimes quite loudly.  Of course I'm sure many in the store were wondering what I had done that she would want to see me dead.

I meant to say 'poshli so mnoi'.....it was after the last but one Harry Potter movie at the cinema and I was keen to get home for some rumpy-pumpy...

And we have a guy at work who's surname is 'Hoey'!!
