« on: October 03, 2007, 03:33:13 PM »
Anybody planning on getting scammed? Post office siezed over $2 billion in fake checks. I guess mailmen don't always deliver the mail, do they?

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,299197,00.html

Here's the Nigerian scam targeting RW in a man's profile.

The basic premise of the check scam is "please cash this check for me, keep 20% for yourself and send me the balance by Western Union transfer". So, for example, the mark cashes a check for $10,000, sends $8,000 to the scammer, and thinks that he / she has $2,000 in free money.

It is good that the Postal Service is doing something about this, because the bogus checks are always very good fakes of a cashier's check, so if the mark asks at his / her bank is this check real the answer is all too often yes - because the bank has no real liability if their employee accepts it. Around 10 days later, the mark gets a message from the bank that the check was no good and oh, by the way, you are now $8,000 overdrawn, how do you want to makeup these funds?

And that Nigerian 419 scammer is a scream, and good mark would take up one of the offers of $20 million +, why grab for a measley $9.5 mil?

Do not think that folks actually fall for these silly scams? Well, a Democratic Congressman fell for it during the Clinton administration - and he was scamming friends, including a Clinton cabinet member, to round up just a few more thousand to get the big payout that the scammer was dangling.

It still amazes me that there are so many people so gullible as to fall for these scams.  I guess I give too much credit to the idea that common sense is common.

I hear ya, 9.5 million isn't enough for me to bite. If someone offered me $20 million, well then, all my common sense gets thrown out the window.

See http://www.fakechecks.org/ to see numerous scam scenarios. This organization has a hilarious TV spot running that I saw earlier today on FOX.

A slightly disheveled, but well spokem, older man sits next to an attractive young woman on a bus, directly behind the driver and tells her:

"I inform you that you have won the national lottery in the Republic of Vulgaria (the fake country was actually some other name, but all Stooge fans know where I got this name) in the amount of $10,000,000. All you need do is cash this check to allow me to transfer the funds to you." He then tries to hand her a somewhat folded check...........

Of course the lady looks at him like he has leprosy and moves to another seat. Who in their right mind would not do so?

Yet several hundred people continue to be duped bt this scam on line each month!

As P.T. Barnum once said: "You can not cheat an honest man and never give a sucker an even break."

Sort, didn't you arrive here initially with a tale of how some Ukrainian woman scammed you out of a good chunk of change and you couldn't understand how she could sleep at night?  :-X

In partial defense of Sort, the scammers are always seeking a way to make their proposal appear to be resonable, at least to one person - ie the mark.

Take for example the Chicago lady profiled on NBC news today. She posted an apartment to let in the Loop on Craig's List and received and inquiry from a person in London claiming to need a temporary place to live due to an assignment to Chicago.

So...to cut to the end of the story...she accepted the $25,000 cashier's check and wired $21,000 to London.

OUCH!

Regretably, the scammer have found a loophole in US banking laws. The funds from a cashier's check must be made available within a few days, well before the check actually clears, per US law.

Hopefully with this current publicity of the scam banks will warn folks of this liability, rather than say, per my perious post "this check is good" and then 2 weeks later say sorry.......and by the way you owe us $21,000...........

Don't feel bad Sort, you aren't the only one that's been used by an AWeb girl. Many guys go looking for love with sincere intentions and they just assume the women are looking for love too but in reality some women are looking for vacations and shopping trips and are willing to use anybody to achieve their goals.

What site did you meet your current lady at?

BillyB it doesn't matter if it is AWeb or any other website. What it matters is the woman character. There any many women now in FSU who found a good way of living.
If it means walking with a foreigner, having sex with him in exchange of money or "goods" so it will be.
And walking on the main street of Nikolaev you can also see them it is not only in the agencies :P They live a good life style because rich Ukrainian men pay for everything off course, so I suspect they are their mistresses.

I met my girl trough an agency which has not the best reputation according to you but after 3 e-mails we where talking on the phone. In my second trip she even payed for the our holidays in advance even after I told her several times I wanted to wire money to her (she refused always).
When I discovered her salary I felt miserable :-[ so next time I am going to open a bank account in her name for this type of things plus it is needed for Tourist Visa  purposes ( :wallbash:)

Nando, you may have gotten to the promise land after walking through a mine field but it's not smart to recommend others to follow your footsteps. You may have been scammed and not even know it if you traded any love letters with Igor, the emplyee of the month at the agency you used.

Yes there are good women at bad agencies but a guy should have no emotional attachment to a woman he's never met, thus he should be able to quit and walk away from any woman he's corresponding with at the agency unless he can communicate with her freely on the phone to develop a friendship with her.

Most of my opinions pertaining to certain agencies come from 3 years of reading other men's experiences on the forums and most of my opinions can be back by info on anti-scam sites and google searches. I never label an agency bad based on one or a few guys experiences.

BillyB, I assume you're referring to your own replica, since King Arthur (if he existed at all ::)) is supposed to have lived in the VI century, dying fighting Anglo-Saxon invaders, and Toledo acquired its reputation after the Umayyad conquest of Spain in the early VIII century, presumably following an influx of Damascene swordsmiths.

Anyway, I think you never saw a stone-embedded sword in real life, as I did in San Galgano (http://www.italiantourism.com/news03.html) ;).

My sword is a fantasy sword.
Morthoseth-Swords of Shadows.
In the beginning of things in ages past there were the Ancient Ones, masters of flesh, fire, and steel, who forged the elements of which the land was made. When men and beasts came into the world the Ancient Ones purposed to have dominion over them, hence they commanded that the Dark Elves create the "Swords of the Ancients." They were forged of secret alloys and each sword has bequeathed its own special power. The swords have been used throughout the ages in the eternal struggle between good and evil.

You can open an account in your country and give her the ATM card for it.
You can transfer funds into it as and when they are needed.
This way you are in control.
