Background check?
« on: June 29, 2005, 06:06:07 AM »
Hello everyone,

I was just wondering what you all think about the ethics of a background check.  Also do you think that the background check services are themselves ethical?

I don't have any reason not to trust the lady with which I'm corresponding and I won't be scammed too easily (I have some experience with it in the past).  At worst case I'll probably take a trip somewhere far away and learn more about the rest of the world.

Right now I'm leaning towards not doing it because it does seem like a violation of trust.  There is a part of me, however, that tells me that it is exactly this trust that is used to build the scammer's trap.

Background check, from both side is in some way connect to private life... you have so much way to check a lady who can be more easy and interesting...

Like sending flower for a special occassion and ask picture... sweet and tender phone call who allow you a almost direct contact...

In anycase, if the woman will hide something, i don't think that a investigator can find it... usual scammer are easy to detect for a man who know the red flag... a visa whore, more difficult but a investigator can not know what think the woman...

And usualy, man ask for background check when they don't trust anymore because of red flag... in so case, don't use money for investigator since it will be difficult for you to find again some trust to these woman... search a other one... there is enough...

In any case, trust is needed until you know all what think you lady... what it is impossible...

My vote is to not do a background check.  Perhaps if she gives you reasons to doubt her it might be warrented but if she gives you reasons to doubt her, you are probably just better off moving on to someone else anyway.

Thanks guys, that was my gut instinct as well since it does seem like an invasion of privacy.  Even though I have nothing to hide I'm not sure if I'd like the idea of undergoing a background check myself either.

I'm glad that my gut instinct that it would be wrong is correct.  As you say Turboguy if it really seems like someone is causing you doubt it is probably just better to move on.

Thanks for the advice!

You may decide not to look into a woman's past yourself, just go along trusting your own good judgement.  However, take comfort in the knowledge that whichever girl you ultimately propose marriage to, she will undergo a rather rigorous background investigation before a visa will be granted.

Your government will do that for you.
