Bad News at Christmas
« on: December 21, 2007, 08:30:19 AM »
Those of you who follow Simoni know that he is engaged to a UW (Marina).  She has lived with Simoni for sometime while completing her post-graduate studies.

Family and religion are most important to Marina, so she flew to Ukraine a few days ago to spend Orthodox Christmas with her family.  Simoni’s job and family kept him here.

Soon after arriving in Ukraine, Marina was in a serious bus accident.  All 15  passengers required treatment at a hospital.  She got the worse of it.  Her face has 50 stitches.  Her knees, wrist and hand were injured as well.

Simoni received the news after any medical emergency had past.  Marina is unable to fly and she asked Simoni not to come to Ukraine now as he "would be in the way.”  She is not even allowing her friends to visit because of the way she looks.

Simoni has advanced her return flight to the 30th and plans to fly with her.   And I have given him the name of a prominent plastic surgeon in Tampa to examine her upon her return.

Simoni learned that the hospital did not take x-rays for broken bones.  Marina complained of a headache so he had her sent to a private facility for a more thorough examination, including brain scan.  Fortunately, there is nothing to be concerned about other than a probable concussion.

Marina is at her mother’s home where she is receiving full care and attention, plus special treatment methods such as "putting cabbage on the cuts and bruises."

Her eyes are swollen shut, yet she sends Simoni text messages throughout the day.  Here is what she wrote, indicating the inner strength of these FSU women:

I ll be ok. Doctor said i need time. I put ice on my eyes. It was swallowed [swollen] so much i couldnt open them :(it is sad:(

Big hill [bump] on forehead with stiches and ugly scar between eyebrows. Eyes very swallowed [swollen] and red circles around eyes.  fat cheeks.  Nothing pretty

I try to find reason not be very upset and think when Hollywood stars change noses it looks ugly too. Then they recover and look great;)

Doctors said to spend in bed as much time as possible to let body recover itself. And take medicine.

Is Russia and Ukraine becoming too dangerous places to allow our wives to go to?  With Bruce's wife's accident and now this, I wonder.  I am always on edge when Lena visits home.

Sorry for your troubles, Simoni, my heart goes out to you and Marina.

Simoni did have a bad feeling about her going as he does not like that place in the winter.  But Marina really wanted to go.

Yes, JB, he is devoted to her, as she is to him.  He must feel miserable over here and not being beside her to comfort her.  He said she sends him 30 SMSs per day.

I am certain that your thoughts will cheer him and Marina.

Personally, I have never felt comfortable riding over there.  Some people drive too fast and recklessly, roads are not the best, and most cars I took did not have a seat belt.  Then there is the issue of emergency services and medical care.

Simoni, sorry to hear this unfortunate event that happened to Marina. Based on your blog, we know you adore her. If it gives you any comfort, the terrible swelling on her face and eyes should go away and there should be no long term effects. Boxers get their faces cut and pounded until they are subject to massive swelling and needing stitches but after some time, swelling goes away and they are back on camera looking as good as ever.
Fund the audits, spread the word and educate people, write your politicians and other elected officials. Stay active in the fight to save our country. Over 220 generals and admirals say we are in a fight for our survival like no other time since 1776.

Better to take her to the USA as soon as possible.

Life is very hard sometimes.

I wish Marina a fast recovery.

Now I know why I was scared about my last week travel by bus to Nikolaev :o

This women, much much more than most, has a smile that lights up a room and a laugh that fills it with joy.

I am very saddened to hear this news. VERY.

If there is anything we can do ... just let us know.

Thanks to everyone here at out RWD community for your kind words and prayers.

It's really a bitter pill to swallow; just can't believe it happened.

Things like this make you think, if only she had taken the next bus...

There were 15 people on the bus and everyone went to the hospital.  Marina was behind the driver and was thrown over him into the windshield.   She staggered off the bus onto the street, where a kind stranger picked her up and took her to the hospital.  Other passengers had to wait almost an hour in the cold to get transported to the hospital.  So in that regard we were lucky.

She is sleeping a lot and talking to a lot of friends on cell phone. And keeping in touch with me by text messages.

She just wrote me:

I just found big bruse on my left arm and shoulder. I didnt feel before it hurts -:( one more surprise -:)

I'm trying to find out more about her treatment.  I'll keep you posted.

Thanks again, everyone.

It is sad to hear this and near Xmas as well. Were you planing to fly over for New Year?
The good thing is that she has no serious injuries, luckily face has an excellent blood supply and wounds on face heal fast with minimal if any scaring.
