As of midnight (CET), 21st December, 2007, nine of the ten countries who joined UE in 2004 (except Cyprus), are also parties to the Schengen Treaty:
1. Estonia
2. Latvia
3. Lithuania
4. Poland
5. Czech Republic
6. Slovakia
7. Hungary
8. Slovenia
9. Malta
Land and
sea borders are now open to their citizens for free circulation to and within other Schengen countries, while
airports shall comply on 30th March, 2008 (no reasons given; update of security systems ?).
The other 15 Schengen countries are:
- UE members: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Greece, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden.
- Non-UE members: Norway, Iceland.
The UK is noticeably absent
