Manners
« on: December 31, 2007, 10:02:24 AM »
Good morning to all here on RWD!  And a happy New Years Eve to all!

I was unsure where to post this, so....  Here it is :)

Manners...

We all know, or should know, that we men are supposed to open the door for our ladies.  We are supposed to chew with our mouths closed.  Not put our elbows on the table.  Help our ladies put on and take off their coats.

Basic manners, taught to us from when we are very small.

Being taught much of the above, and more, I feel I have a basic grasp of Manners and proper behavior.  However, I am always looking to expand what I know.

Does anyone have a good web link that talks about manners?  I've searched here, and with Google, and not found what I seek.

Greatly appreciate your time!

Did you try keywords like social graces, etiquette, social manners?

If you wanted to get down to the roots of it all, you could read Monsignor Giovanni Della Casa's (1503-1556) Galateo overo de' costumi (published posthumously in 1558). An English translation is also available ;D.

No mention of etiquette aimed at FSUW, though ;).

Do you see any difference between an etiquette as such and an etiquette aimed at FSUW?  :)

Sure..

Use of false smile when greeting or posing for pictures.. or selling for that matter..
Euro vs US 'switcheroo' methods of cutting and getting food to mouth..

Lily, in 1558 there was not even a SU (much less a FSU), and Monseigneur does not mention any Muscovian women, either ;).
