« on: July 14, 2005, 11:17:45 AM »
I read on emporis.com a tower called the Russia tower will be built in Moscow topping off at 2,000 feet tall,3 other tall buildings will be built for apartment and office space, they will range from 50 to 80 stories.Moscow seems to be growing fast! I had no idea they would allow buildings this tall in Russia, very interesting read.

Hi Joe,

At the moment, Moscow does not have many tall buildings.   There is a tv tower that is very tall but even in the center of Moscow there are not a lot of tall buildings.  There are 7 identical monoliths I believe they call them.   One of which is the Ukraina hotel where I will be staying in 10 days.   I am not sure how tall they are.   I would guess 30 stories or so.    Yes, Moscow is growing.  You see a lot of construction in Moscow and the same goes for Kiev.  Not nearly so much in St Petersburg.

A few years ago there was an article in the NY Times about the many new buildings springing up around Moscow, most for housing. Many of the residents were seething because the buildings were ugly and stood in pale comparison with the existing architecture.

Then again, this is a problem in many cities. Anyone paying attention to the design of the new Freedom Tower in Manhattan can see how passionate people are about their home cities.

I looked at the design pictures and these buildings will be absolutely beautiful.I have always been interested in architecture,I think they will add flavor to Moscow and not take away from the Kremlin, etc.
Yes people are passionate about the design of the Freedom Tower and they should be,I read there will be no occupied floors above the 60'th floor in the Freedom Tower.I also heard Donald Trump hates the design of the Freedom Tower.
The tower in Moscow will have 133 floors. If you work on the top floors it will be a long elevator ride! I heard in Atlanta at the Westin Hotel,it's the largest hotel in America at 71 floors,it takes like 15 minutes to get to the top floors! I think it is great that this is happening in Moscow, hopefully more people will take notice of Moscow and go there to vacation.

It's a good idea.  We all know how well the lifts in Russia operate.  :P

I'm passionate about the design of the Freedom Tower too, since this is the view I have (or used to have) from my doorstep:

I wouldn't trust it in the hands of Donald Trump, however.

I agree,it should be something different than the original World Trade Center design, the citizens of New York should all be happy and agree.Does he think he has the right to control the whole city of New York? I don't think so.I was there last month and I still had tears in my eyes, the last time I saw the pit was in May,2002.It still is a tear jerker.

Truth tell many Muscovites hate these new "masterpieces" of glass and concrete:(

Ps Moscow stays at karst rocks (those which are diffusing by underground waters producing cavern) So it's very difficult to built very tall building here ( and very dangerous if somebody does that in wrong way)

Yeah I did, it was the worst day of my life.

This is where I was: (WARNING: these are graphic)

Less than 20 seconds later I took this:

It took me months before I was able to d/l these images from my digital cam. I considered deleting them but I'm glad I didn't, I think it's incumbent to remember.
