Got a letter today, from a lady I've been corresponding with for awhile.  In one letter she told me she likes to wear a body-cloth to walk around the house.  Okay, I asked her what it was.  House coat, whatever.  Well, five days later I get this letter back.  I quote: "I do not know what a shabrack, it's the first time when I hear about it.  Did I really write anything like that?  Haven't you mixed up my letter with somebody else's one?"

Shadrack?  Body-cloth for that matter.  Then went on to say, she doesn't know what to ask me about and often have to sit and think what to ask.

Good news, she probably uses an online translator or dictionary to read and write your letters.
Bad news, her English is probably not enough for a lot of direct communications unless you will have a lot of patience and can understand differences in grammar and sentence building of other languages.

Now about the subject. In Russia is is normal that people when the are not going anywhere dress in comfortable clothes. It can be some old clothes, a pijama or jogging suit. The fancy clothes you see on the street are reserved for when they go outside, not to be spoilt by every day wearing.

I lived in iran for awhile and the full body covering was called chador.  Your photo shows the Afghani tribal version in which even the eyes are covered.  I have been there too and remember the garb being called chadri in Afghani (very close to Farsi).

Is "chadra" a Russian term or one used in the Stans?

If people are going to be a day or more on the train, they change into jogging suits or other more comfortable clothing as soon as the train is moving and change back into their regular clothing when they are going to be getting off. It is quite the amazing transition.

To be honest, I was never in the habit of changing clothes except when I was young and growing up on the farm where I had my "school" clothes and my "go help your father clean out the barn clothes." I see the logic however, and if I ever remember I will have to buy a cheap pair of nike track pants for the train. However, I usually end up wearing regular clothes that I know that I want to wash anyway when I get there and head for a shower as soon as I reach my destination. I don't worry too much about impressing the taxi driver

serebro, she's in Y.O  the letters are translated through an agency and she said in the first letter, before this one, she wears a body-cloth around the house.  Then telling me this shabrack, was new to her.  Something strange here.  Maybe the first terp messed up the letter, or she's just strange.

In Kazan, where you live, do the Muslim women wear such "get-ups" in public?  The reason I ask is because this photo was probably taken in Afghanistan.

Kazan is a modern city, even though Tatarstan is a muslim republic they are not as conservative there. I just got back from Kazan 2 weeks ago and I haven't seen any women wearing that. A lot of fur coats and fur hats though!

From having known a few educated Iranian women [good women], they wear the chador only when in public.  When arriving at their destination, they remove the chador and underneath you will find the finest French fashions just like the RW enjoy.  Without the chador men would grab their butts.  That was in the 70s.  I can not imagine what would happen today.

From an ex-colleague (female) who visited there women in Teheran wear normal fashion, although covering their hair and not showing any knees. The famous black dress is seen, but not overwhelmingly as people in the West suspect.

Interesting, but you gotta admit that Iran 40 years ago and Iran under Ahmadinejad are two different countries all together.. I don't think too many people can afford nice clothes over there these days..

You would be very suprised... Actually people in Iran are rolling in money....just nobody wants to have it because of the boycots.

Thanks Eduard for the info.  You are one of the few brave souls who will venture to speak with me on the site even though I'm now adorned with glowing neon green nomenclature.  If I had written nomenclaturия they may have taken it as, well, a new loan word from Latin and escalated my status to yellow.

So, in light of Eduard's informed info we can safely conclude that phantom's lady is neither Muslim, but somewhat and to some extend scantily clad while at home, around the house, partially nude and revealing, comfortable, inviting, hinting (of course for phantom only), indoors, inside...

From a somewhat dubious source I was informed once upon a time that a woman can do seven things at the same time, whereas a man can only do one thing.  Perhaps phantom is ambidextrious?
