Haven't been able to post in a quiet a while, been in Moscow the past few weeks and will be going again on February 15, just can't get enough.  Anyway, while being in Russia over New Years I watched an old movie Irony of Fate with my girlfriend, so I just wanted to say that if you can understand this movie you will understand Russian Women.  Here's a link where you can see some music clips from the movie .  Thanks and good luck to all.

The movie you mentioned is indeed ranked first among Russian people since 30 years already.
You just touched on a rather complicated and very interesting issue on connection between this movie and understanding Russians.
Did you watched this movie translated into English? Did your friend make any comments to this film?
What in particular did you learn about people shown in this movie? How exactly can this movie help understanding Russians?

Lily, too many questions.  This movie just has a lot of soul and heart and that's all.

We have a copy of this film in Russian w/ English subtitles and the translation is fairly accurate. It is one of those holiday traditions in our home (like watching "A Christmas Story" on Dec 25, and listening to "Alice's Restaurant" on thanksgiving). I'm not sure this movie is the best at helping one understand Russians, but it is a fantastic movie with a great story line. (Just bizarre enough to almost be believable  ).
