The Quiet Beatle was right...

From Got My Mind Set On You
       Performed by George Harrison
       Written by Rudy Clark

But it's gonna take money
A whole lotta spending money
It's gonne take plenty of money
To do it right child

It's gonna take time
A whole lot of precious time
It's gonna take patience and time, ummm
To do it, to do it, to do it, to do it, to do it,
To do it right child

I got my mind set on you
I got my mind set on you
I got my mind set on you
I got my mind set on you

And this time I know it's for real
The feelings that I feel
I know if I put my mind to it
I know that I really can do it

The song just popped into my head while I've been remodeling the kitchen.  My wife and son are still in Russia (and will be for another two weeks).  So I've been here for three weeks, on my own, working the day job and remodeling the kitchen on my off days.

So far, all of the brown things are Linen White (cabinets), the white things are now Deep Pool blue (walls), the thing over our heads is bright white again (ceiling), except for the big light which now matches the walls (it was a lovely woodgrain metal).  All of the previously functioning appliances have been replaced with shinier, functioning appliances (even the telephone!).

All (!) that's left to do is install the range hood and a light fixture over the sink; replace all of the wall outlets, switches, and cover plates; remove all the masking tape and fix my 'touches'; install all the hardware back on the cabinet doors (17 of them) then hang them; put all of the things that were in the cabinets back where they belong (currently spread between the dining room, living room, and my son's room); and put the dining room table and chairs back in the dining room (currently, it's in the living room.  Had to paint the cabinet doors somewhere, right?)

But there is a light at the end of the tunnel.  All of the painting is done (less touch ups).  I celebrated by pulling a bottle of Russian Standard Premium out of the freezer.  It was a wonderful -3F (I know this, as the readout on the new refrigerator said so).  It was cool to watch that beautiful bottle frost up like an icy beer mug.  A toast to my MIL (who gave me the vodka as a gift), a toast to my family, and a toast to the paint on the walls.  Then I decided it would be a good idea to put the bottle back into the freezer.

So why did I tell you all of this?  Because there's no one in the house to share this moment of joy and celebration with.  That's why!  Thanks for sharing the moment with me...

(Sorry no pictures -- My wife has all the digital camera equipment with her in Russia!).

From my experiance, when all you have to do is "Finish up"... you're only halfway there.
... Ya might want to leave those cabinet doors open for longer than you think, the paint only feels dry to your touch, against another fresh painted surface it's not.

I just had to download it.

Thanks.. I'll play this in the car every time we go to the mall!.. wifey has been complaining that I always put on a sour face when we go there.

One of the jokes being circulated over on the women's forum.

Quote
Yuri was dying. His wife, Olga, was maintaining a candlelight vigil by his side. She held his fragile hand, tears running down her face. Her praying roused him from his slumber; He looked up and his pale lips began to move slightly. "Olya my darling," he whispered.
"Hush my love," she said. "Rest, don't talk."
He was insistent. "Olya," he said in his tired voice, "I have something that I must confess."
"There's nothing to confess," replied the weeping Olga, "Everything's all right, go to sleep."
"No, no. I must die in peace, Olya. I ... I slept with your sister, your best friend, her best friend, and your mother!"
"I know, sweetheart," whispered Olga, "relax now and let the poisons work."

Interesting, as the word finish has several meanings in our house, and I've lacked finishing for almost 5 weeks now.  :?

The house, on the other hand, is finished (for now).  The kitchen is fully assembled (except for the floor, which my wife needs to select a pattern).  The bathroom project is finally complete.  The house is cleaned.  All the laundry is done.  I even had to buty a new electric kettle, as the old one decided it didn't want to hold water any more (instead, it would flood the electric base  ).

I almost don't want to touch anything until Tuesday, else I'll just have to straighten it out later.  Guess I'll just sit in the computer corner, and drink some vodka... :D

Wll, my friend, when we find ourselves in the other's province, we certainly will toast to our good fortune.  For me it's that in just about 25 hours from now,  my eyes will be happy to set their gaze on my wife and son for the first time in five weeks...
