Yes, smoking is a stronger part of the culture of eastern europe than it is in USA.

I have no statistics, but I also think that smoking is more prevelant among younger women than older women in eastern europe.

Also, it is something that they think nothing of lieing about.  Some of them think that saying they smoke will rule them out for first meetings, but that after you are actually charmed by them, that you won't mind if they smoke.  Others of them think that they can quit anytime they want, so they just say they don't smoke and then plan to quit after you and they get serious about each other.

But for me, and many others (both women and men), smoking is a sign of a very weak person mentally, emotionally and stability wise and a deep character flaw.  So even if they really do quit for you, the weak mentality and character still remains.

Quite aside from the psychological and character problems that such people have, there are the very real medical costs down the road facing smokers and those who ultimately will pay their bills.  Initially the bills will be paid by the man who supports them, but ultimately their health bills will be paid by the general taxpayers.  Same goes for men smokers, of course.

The evidence is very clear that smokers cost employers (and hence employees who share in the cost of insurance plans) and general taxpayers billions of dollars per year in health costs over and above what it costs for health care for non-smokers.

Albert, do you mean that i have a weak character  So, very lucky for some of you that i am smoker other it will be the hell for some of the people who post here :P...

Of course, smoke is not healthy... like use car in place of use foot, like work to much for money and not rest enough, like eat industrial food, like alchohol, ... a lot of thing are not healthy in these world...  a last study have show that people who go to the church each week, life around one year more...

I am smoker and it is my choice... the big problem is the non-respect of non-smoker by some smoker... do you know that the cold smoke who reach the non smoker is more toxic that the hot one who reach the smoker...

Happily, the law are changing in my country... from some time ago, it was prohibith to smoke in public place... from next year, in January, it will be prohibith to smoke in restaurent, cafe and work place... and i find this normal... i have always smoke outside home, outside the work place... smoker are one problem but the big one is the non respect of the non-smoker...

For information, about the bill... each year, automobile is the main case of several dead and invalid... the bill is several time more high that these from cigarette... the stress at work ( workalcholic ) is one big problem too with overweight... until now, i was never ill... only some work accident... my great father was smoker and he was solid like a rock, he is dead simply at 96 year old... my groot mother was smoker and she is always living at 95 year old... yes, smoke is bad but it is only one of the parameter...

Again, the only thing i find not good is the non respect of no-smoker by smoker...

Not going to start a smoking forum here, but disagree with the first paragraph. Nicotine is one of the most difficult drugs to quit. In the past many of the most powerful, intelligent men and women on earth smoked. The government LOVES the tax revenue generated by smokers even deducting the health costs. Yes it shortens life, but also social security payments. The SSA could not afford everyone not smoking.

In any case yes.. Europeans and even more FSU young women smoke.

A lot of RW do not consider themselves "smokers" if they only have an occasional cig or two.  They only consider people who smoke one after another as "smokers".  It is like some Russians don't consider themselves as drinkers if they only drink wine or beer.  My wife usually has one smoke a day and that doesn't bother me in the least.  If I insisted on it, she would stop even that.

My last Russian girlfriend said in her profile that she did NOT smoke.  After a weeks, she admitted to me that she smoked "rarely." After a few more months, she admitted to "sometimes" smoking, and listed the various times when she was likely to smoke.  I never saw it initially, but after a while, she couldn't resist the impulse, and indulged right in front of me.  I asked her why she did not tell met the truth in the beginning.  She said, "All girls lie about smoking."  Hmmm.  Not the only thing, of course.

In my good old Soviet times you would have a BIG problems if teachers catch you with a cigarette in school ( I mean our secondary school, older classes - ages 14-17. And I speak only mostly about boys, because smoking school-girl was "nonsense" or VERY rare thing in my times) Not that boys didn't smoke but at least they tried to hide in a far corner of school yard, knowing they were doing "bad") After USSR's fall all "suddenly" decided that such "bad" behavior of teachers was an act of violence against personal freedom. Topics a-ka-"Should secondary schools have smoking room !!! ?" or "Should pupils have written permission from parents to smoke or they are "free" and have a right to do with their life what they want " - were widely discussed in our "free-speech" press and at TV shows ( interrupted each 15 minutes by commercials of tobacco companies)  And we got what we have now - the ages of smoking children dropped at 8 - 10 years and nobody is surprised now with smoking school-girls.

Though at least our authorities start return into right minds and try now to cut a number of smoking children ( oh!:? Yeah An award for a class where nobody smokes - among 11:shock: years olds . "Fantastic" thing in Soviet tiran times)  - but it's much more difficult task than to habituate to smoking.

The same thing with drinking beer Out of any control commercials and promoting of beer by companies leaded to beer-alcoholism among youth ( especially among girls, as for boys than they don't stay too long at this stage and move fast to vodka-alcoholism)

Such fruit of democratisation and freedom at Russian soil:?.

So girls really don't see smoking as sin at all , therefore what for "to spoil" your profile with such "little thing" if that may low your chances for forjenber husband? No reason!
