Can't help you with AFA... But have you looked into the Art-hotel? Cool little place and inexpensive. I was there in February. No kitchen, but they serve up a nice breakfast of eggs and sausage with the room price.      http://eng.art-hotel.ru/

Thanks for that Utrobina, it looks like a cool place, but unfortunatly it is already fully booked for the week from 18th.
But thanks for your consideration.

carraig,
You might want to shoot a PM at Phil dAmore as he lives in St Pete.

Do it quickly! IF you're going to St. Pete at this time of year, you want to make reservations 3 months or more earlier. It's the festive birthday season of the city. I went to St. Pete in May and tried to make reservations a month before arriving and no American or Russian travel agent had anything. Yes, I even called travel agents in St. Pete with no success. Phil has connections there for renting apartments and he saved me from sleeping on the street. Search the members list for him and shoot him a PM. Get his help and be sure to tip him since he's not the one renting the apartment.

Send an email to Ludmila at spring@mailbox.alkor.ru. I rented two flats from her. One was ok and the other fantastic. Mention Greg from New York. Its been awhile but she may still remember me. Both places were right off Nevsky Prospect. Reasonable and clean. I doubt if any of her places are listed with agencies. She can also register you and can provide a car and driver.

Thanks a lot to everyone, I wish I had started this search sooner. I just had no idea that St Petersburg was so popular to such an extent that most of the hotel and apartment accomodation would be booked up six weeks before I would go.
I will be exploring these links now thanks. :)

Note to all:  Thanks so much for the plugs but unfortunately Nina and I are no longer handling apartment rentals.  Most of the people that we used to work with have moved away from short-term rentals in favor of long-term (that way they can have a longer vacation out of the city)

Oh yes, the city is booked solid although one might find some nice little bed and breakfasts here and there.  Just FYI, pretty much everyone is demanding payment in Euros now, nobody wants US dollars.

I had worked with Ludmila spring@mailbox.alkor.ru in the past and she does have some nice apartments, but like everyone else likes to get out of the city during the summer!

I have to be out of my own place by the end of May otherwise I could give you a smokin' deal on this joint!   However I'm pretty sure the new owner won't be wanting any houseguests!

Good luck to you!

Phil

You could try
http://www.oksanas.net/

I used them 2 years ago.
Like you I left booking quite late but not quite as late as you :-)

Anyhow I managed to book my 10 days ok but had to split the visit between 2 flats. Which worked fine as they handled all the transfers.

Last week of May/first week of June seems just about the busiest of the year.
