Oooops.  There ARE intelligent measures being employed.  Just because you can't see them, doesn't mean they don't exist.  One-way tickets get extra scrutiny, so do last minute bookings and people without luggage.  Do you see those things?  There are others you also don't see as well.

As I mentioned earlier, Mark, they are not checking the wrong people.  They have to be checking every stereotype or the bad guys will find the weakness in the system.  They have used pregnant women as suicide bombers and mothers with infants in their arms as well as mentally disabled people.  Would be no problem finding an old woman with Alzhiemers and strapping a bomb to her.

The bad guys are less likely to do that when they know everyone gets checked regardless.

I really hope so...    It's just saddens me a lot that world is so imperfect...   Sometimes I think that people deserve to get extinct as soon as possible, such terrible creatures...

Hey Oooops, don't get discouraged. Just the other day I saw a spider helping a fly get untangled from his web, and helped him get back to his family ...   :clapping:

I do Agree there are measures that normally are not seen by the commom person! I was very late(I was on pay phone with United) boarding my flight in Milan. They were ready to disembark the whole plane because of my check in luggage. The Italian stewardess was very happy to see me! after they told me off! So I do agree they have some measures not normally seen unless you stumble on it!

I hate insects (flies in particular) and spiders are the only ones that I can tolerate because they eat those flies.   :D

Happy Independence Day Everyone!

I think the theme of this thread or at least one of the themes has been that the United States is bad, its government is bad, it acts only in its own self interest, its people are ignorant, arrogant, yada, yada.

Let's give America a break, at least on her birthday!

I was on Snopes.com today.  Snopes, for those who don't know, investigates the urban legends and provocative emails that get sent around.  Most of the more interesting ones are bogus, as it turns out.  Some are true and a very few even understate the truth.  One such email dealt with the fact that the United States gives billions of dollars in foreign aid each year to contries who, in the UN, vote the opposite way from the USA on nearly every little issue...sometimes just wording of resolutions.

There is only one country who votes with the United States on 9 out of 10 votes.  No, it's not the UK.  Even in Post 9/11 environment. Britain only votes with the USA 6 out of 10 times.  Australia?  Try again..the Aussie's are only with us about as often as the French are and if you think it's our neighbors to the north, then you're only getting colder, eh.

The one country the United States can count on nine out of ten times is the country who without America's support would cease to exist:  Isael.  Lest anyone think that money buys support, consider that Egypt, the recipient of $2B annually from the US votes against us 86% of the time.  Kuwait, whom we helped rescue from Sadam Hussein's invasion, raping and genocide is likewise against the US 9 out of ten times almost matching the voting record of the world champions of anti-Americanism and birthplace of 15 of the 9/11 hijackers - Saudi Arabia!

So now the question that begs to be asked:  How much of the rhetoric about America's foreign policy is rooted in our ultra close ties with Israel?

It appears then that if America decided, say, on inauguration day 2009, that we would abandon all support for Israel, leaving her to be devoured by the jackals at her gates, that America's foreign policy would suddenly become quite acceptable to the world.

We might even be able to keep our shoes on at the airport again.  But what makes America stand nearly alone in the world is that we are williing to stand on principle..even if it's without shoes.

Well as it's now the 5th of July, ( for me ) I can now safely say I  respected your wish.... ;)

Actually Ronnie - the theme of this thread was possible reasons for FSUW breaking off engagements..   even *if* all the above was true, I don't think it's high on a FSUW list of excuses :)

But what makes America stand nearly alone in the world is that we are williing to stand on principle..

OK Ronnie, the people of Burma, Zimbabwe and other oppressive regimes are waiting to see these principles put into action ...  Oh I forgot, they haven't got oil, gas, etc. ;) ...  it's not just the US.. it's the EU, UN... Sadly, these "principles" don't seem to apply evenly... I wonder why?!

If you have a chance, have a look at Microcosmos: Le peuple de l'herbe, a 1996 French documentary without commentary that was released as a movie, rather fascinating ;).

I find insects to be very strange and weired, too scary.    :o :D   I'd rather pet a snake or a mouse, than a butterfly...   :D

I like snakes, but I don't think that I can pet them just because of the thought that I will need to feed a snake with a mouse or frog  :(

I had a white rat named Borsika. What a lovely and funny creature he was  :) Every time when I opened the refrigerator he climbed my shoulder waiting for something tasty, and he liked to hide the gingerbread in different places. Also I had a crow. Very smart bird.

Re: Epidemic of Cold Feet

Meets the girl of his dreams in for example June
the girl want him to ask her to marry him in July, her mother is for it too, wonders why he does not ask
he leaves ukraine
he returns again 2 months later, they meet, her mother has no objections if they get married in Odessa. But he decides to to the visa process K1, the visa process takes 10 months, they have not met in person in 10 months, just by email and telephone, the man does not show his feelings and emotions in his emails, only she does. The visa process is finished, she gets her visa, but now she i s not sure she knows him and decides to terminate maybe because now she has a boyfriend too, or maybe because her mother is now against it

See how things could change in 12 months, time is not always on your side

In this case the time was not used effectively.  It was always on his side, he just didn't use the time well to cement the relationship.  I can't blame her for having second thoughts about a man who either cannot afford or doesn't see the necessity of going to visit her for 10 months.  She wouldn't need a boyfriend or mother against it to arrive at this decision, especially with his lack of demonstration of affection.  I think she's being the rational one in this relationship.

Agreed. Guy was already takin' her for granted it seems. Not a good indicator for her happiness in future marriage? How could a guy, who found the "girl of his dreams" be as neglectful as that? And the non-emotional letters and phone calls? No, doesn't add up. She was smart and opted out, IMHO.
