Security Clearance question
« on: July 08, 2008, 12:08:26 AM »

Hello to all.  I am a brand new out of the box with styrofoam peanuts falling off member.  I joined in fact to ask this one question.

I am an active duty American Army servicemember.  I currently hold a TS/SCI/TK clearance and while I don't do any really James Bond type stuff or hold any of Uncle Sugar's deepest and dearest secrets in my head, I do have a job that deals with secret and sensitive information on a daily basis. In a couple of years when I retire, I plan on using that clearance to get a pretty sweet contractor job, in the same field.

A person I work with wanted to go to Russia to climb some mountain and was given a bucket load of grief over it and eventually decided to not go.  Is it really that big of an issue?

So, does anyone have any experience in dealing with this?

Does anyone know how this would affect my search for a non-AW?

I find myself drawn to FSU women as possible future wives.  I have looked at women from other countries and cultures and they just don't do it for me.  I am not at all interested in the average AW (My apologies if that is a sore spot with anyone here, just being honest).

 Any advice?

 I thank you in advance.

I can not tell you about US, but for Canada, this is ok. The best is to call a potential employer HR department and to ask them their policies. You will have probably better info than here.

Why not go to Ukraine? No visa required and unless your passport has some type of special stamps in it, I do not see where there should be a problem.

Because I found my girl in St:Petersburg ;) But i agree, the visa procedure is a PIA!  :wallbash:

However I can do it locally, with the local consul :) A really nice guy :)

Diverboy. I responded to lookinbill but you answered as if it was directed to you. Bit confused here.

As I understand your post most of the guys who replied seem to have missed your point.

Your expecting grief from the US Army right rather than from Russia or Ukraine? Given where you want to go and what you want to do.

I do not know what the US situation is but there are several ex us servicemen on this board who may be able to tell you better. I only know that in the case of an Australian ex serviceman who had similar clearance to you and wanted to go to China to do similar things.. He was required to tell the army where he wanted to go and was forbidden by them to actually travel.

Does not help you directly but could indicate you might be in for a rough ride. Hopefullysome other US servicemen can inform you more.

Thanks so far.   Yes, it is the Army, my Government that will give me a hassle and I want to avoid that.   It would be wrong of course for me to start even a conversation with a woman if I could in the end not deliver.

Several of the guys in my unit are married to foreign nationals, one from Russia, but they met in college and had been married for several years before they were assigned/picked  to/for this unit I am in.  Even then and after the assignment orders came through, getting the clearance bumped up from plain old Secret to Top Secret, etc.  there were hassles.  So, I am in a bit of a conundrum.

Hello,
If you contact your security personnel they will perhaps tell you the process that you are required to go through prior to travel and post travel. I personally worked for one of the national labs. They had a very specific process pre and post.  Now they could stop your travels if they chose but never seem to...  In the military I would say that you are not going there in the near future. With a contractor I do not see any problems as long as you tell them pre and post. Jump through the hoops.
I have been told there are several people here in the area with TS that travelled and married RWs.  Make sure you always tell security of travel plans always!!! Even to "friendly nations" you would be surprised for whom you have to go through the process. So it is best to ask than to loose your clearance. That could get you in big trouble.
Good luck.Mark
