Anyone going to Kyiv soon?
« on: July 16, 2008, 08:14:57 PM »
I just came back from 2.5 weeks in Ukraine and forgot to give my ATM card to my lady while I was there :wallbash:.  She lives in Kyiv and if someone is going there soon, I could mail it to you and she could meet you at the airport, train station or other suitable location.  Thanks in advance for your help!  ;)

We recently mailed a new ATM card to our daughter in Simferopol, the second time we have done so.  I also did this when my wife was still there.  In each case I simply put it inside a Hallmark card and sent it by regular mail.  They all arrived just fine (In fact any letters, packages, etc. that have been sent back and forth from here to there have always arrived with no problem).  It typically takes from 1-2 weeks to arrive with last month's card taking 10 days.  We just told her the new PIN number after the card arrived.

I know we had a thread recently talking about the dangers of stolen ATM cards but the facts ultimately provided didn't support the paranoia.  If you have only a minimal amount in the account until you are sure it arrived, there should be no problem.

Thanks for the good idea Scott.  A few years ago someone told me that Ukraine scans the mail electronically for cards with magnetic strips and then throws them away, but maybe that's no longer the case (or never was).  I'll give it a shot and post the results.  Thanks again!

I'll be going in mid-Sept if you can wait that long.

I am going to Kyiv in a little less than 4 weeks.  I depart on the 15th of August from Chicago and due to land in KBP at 9:05AM on the 16th.  I will be in Kiev for 5 days -Ulyana has her interview at the US Embassy on the 19th, which I will attend with her.  I will depart on the 21st to come back to America.  So, let me know if you need me to carry over the ATM card - I would be more than happy to do it.

I'll name that tune in 3 notes...

I'll be leaving for Kiev in about 10 days. Is that soon enough?

DHL might be a good possibility. Probably more secure than regular mail. And Taz ... what can you say .. better than agent 007    ;D

DHL is pretty good BUT I'll caution you that almost anything sent express mail of any type seems to be searched more often. I'll be there in Kiev for about 12 hours, gone for a few weeks and then back for a few days. Sound confusing enough?

I should be there about mightnight the 15th until 10AM the 16th but I'll be very close to downtown and could easily help if she can come meet me. I'll be traveling for a few days before ultimately reaching Kiev so I'll be pretty tired I'm sure. IF that time doesn't work I'll be back in Kiev about the 30th sometime in the evening.

Steveij - I'll take that as a compliment. ;D
