document for child
« on: July 20, 2008, 11:17:05 AM »
Hello,

I would like to know if someone has a model of letter to be signed by the father. We are starting this part of paperwork ..

I just want to be sure that the letter is not only authorizing her son to live with her in Canada, but allowing him to travel to any countries...

Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes Oscar Wilde

I am looking for some sample Permission Letters too, only for a child to leave from Russia to the US. I made different searches but couldn't find samples themselves.

Do you have to mention dates of travel, reason of travel, anything about K1, where a child will stay exactly in the US???

Is there anybody who has just come through K1 with this doc and it worked?

I would really appreciate any leads or links.  :D

This is my experience with it.  No one will ask to see it.

When my (now) wife and son were headed to the USA with me on a K-1 in 2004, my wife was very insistant that she had to get this letter from our son's father, and get all the official notary stamps, etc. on it.  She had that letter in her hand, along with her passport, tickets, etc.  Departing from SVO, arriving at JFK, nowhere along the way did anyone wish even to look at it.

In the past four years, they have traveled to Russia to visit 3 times (they're there right now).  No one as yet has asked to see the letter.

The main reason is that it really carries very little official weight.  As long as the child is traveling with one of his parents (and a young child rarely has his own passport, but is in his mother's passport until age 8(?)), there is typically no questions asked.  Even if a father did give his written permission, he could withdraw that permission at any later time, making the letter invalid.

Of course, to cover all bases, get a letter.  It can be really generic -- "I, (name), the father of (child's name), give permission for my son to travel outside of Russian Federation..."

We were asked by immigration officials here to submit the document (we had a court order).  Is probably standard throughout EU but not sure.  If you ever consider moving to Europe for work etc might be a good idea to have one.

Immigration may ask for a letter (depending on the countries involved).  I've also read (a long while ago) that some of the smaller airports outside of Moscow also may ask.

I can only speak of my experience.  SVO <-> JFK with the child traveling with one parent.

As a side note, our boy flew as an unaccompanied minor on Delta this spring to SVO.  The Delta website stated that he should have a letter giving him permission to fly (Mama stayed in Vermont, I went to JFK with the boy.  He now has his own red passport).  No one asked me for any letter, even though I'm his stepfather.

This June Vika and our son were to fly back to Ukraine for holiday. When we arrived last year, as is the norm, he traveled on his mother's Ukrainian passport.  He was 11.  His visa is there next to hers.  No problem last year.  However, one year later, upon arrival at the Delta airlines counter at IAH in Houston, she was informed that they would not allow the boy to board the plane since he did not have his own passport.  A new law in the US courtesy of ICE says all international travelers must have their own passports, even babies.  It took two days of phone calls and stressed out nerves, but finally the airline relented after direct intervention from the Ukrainian Embassy in Washington.  Needless to say, upon arrival in Ukraine, getting his government issued travel document (I am told it is technically not a passport) was her number one priority.

It would have been nice to have been forewarned.
