Putin rant
« on: July 29, 2008, 11:32:55 PM »
Is this the forum I can rant about Putin?  That idiot cost me a LOT of money in his comments about Mechel.  Can Russia ever turn into a normal country that people can invest in without worrying if Putin will steal it?  All this talk of Moscow becoming a global financial center is laughable.

K thanks.

Russia is a high risk high return country.  I would not be surprised if some friends of Putin did not short this stock before his comments.  Than buy back the shares when they gain in price to get more influence over the company plus millions in their pockets.  Most people in Russia get rich on what we in the West consider illegal.  However, most people I know in Russia think it is OK to do business this way.

DKMM,

MTL had already broken down before Putin's comment, perhaps from insider selling.

Russian stocks are not buy and hold.  Good to have a stop loss in place.

I purchased LUKOY in early 2004 and have seen it decline 30% lately.  If I had played a trading range of 78-88 over the past three years, I would have done very well.  Instead I treated it as a core holding such as JNJ and GE.  WRONG!  There is nothing "core" about Russia, even oil.

I agree with Possum.  Stay away for a few years.  Your investment props up the FSB/Mafia syndicate.
