steviej-
agreed- i would say she is not typical for many RW relocating here in driving in this
aggressive way.
but she had quite a bit of past driving experience in Ukraines second largest city
(where driving aggressively is quite the norm?)
and her fathers past job was as a stunt driver in a "auto show"
driving on two wheels and various stunts..
so she grew up around that, a true love for cars and knowledge of them and driving in general.

I think most RW (i know of ) coming here to the USA,
often have very little actual driving experience, and so that reflects in cautious /learning
mode?

RW seem to either have a lot of first hand driving experience,
and its in heavy traffic ,with bad roads and crazy drivers..

or they have none,
there doesnt seem to be a lot in between??

*********************************************************************
As far as the RW trait of *debating first* ..act later,  LOL

i just thought it was my wife,
not some nationality trait ;)

but just for KenC (and Lena)

here's a  hypothetical (but quite absurdly possible) conversation between us!!

:::::at a wedding reception and que :::: hookey pookey music::::::::

you put your left foot in..

me: common T, put your left foot in! :)
her: why should you put your left foot in? (asked in good humor, but asked nonetheless)
me: because its a dance,,and thats part of the structure of the dance.

her: who wrote the song?
me: i have no idea ,its old and quite common at weddings.

her: why only at weddings?
me: it  isn't only played at weddings, but yes mostly played or danced at them.
 i dont know why.

her: that seems silly. How old is it? What year did it start?
me: i suppose ,but its just for fun, and family gatherings /weddings just fit the nature of the songs intent? I have no real idea of its age,  older than me!

her: Thats OLD! :)
Listen, of course I understood to put your left foot in..
I meant why the left foot , why not the right?
me: you are going back to your first question? they've got to that part long ago..you were debating with me,if you were dancing , you would have heard that part. why not just try it?

her:ok, I will, but why do they start with the left foot  first?
me: I dont know. its just a silly song, they do the hands as well, arn't you watching?

her:of course, but if you dont know why ,  how can you do this dance then?
me: because you dont have to know the dance ,beforehand,
you just follow the instructions..like "simon says"

her: I understand that ,so its a typical american dance, no need to know anything, just follow the instructions yelled at you!
me: yes of course ;) it's not ballet, its just for fun! you understood it from beginning ,
so why don't you just dance it? why do you need to know it's history?or the year it was written. lol
just go try it!!  It beats the chicken dance!!!!! ;)

her: ok !! (still in good humor ,and certainly willing to give it a try now that the questions are out of the way)
me:  well it seem's it's  too late
:::as hookey pookey music is ending:::::

no it dint happen, but i can easily imagine it..lol

laugh  or cry
welcome to my world..
;)

AJ - that is just too funny !!!! One of the funniest things I have ever read

Definitely that's an RW thing. I've never experienced that with an AW. But I know exactly what you mean  :)

This is a littlee off topic but thanks for the video. I was in Kiev for a few days and saw ads for the concert and thought about getting tickets but with the wedding and all it seemed too much. Now I wish I had made the effort. It looked like a good time

The Lefortovo tunnel, apparently, and those speeding cars must be smuggling prisoners escaping from:
Quote
Lefortovo prison is a prison in Moscow, Russia, since 2005 in the command of the Ministry of Justice of Russia. It was constructed in 1881. It was named after the Lefortovo District of Moscow where it is located, which in turn took its name from Franz Lefort, a close associate of Tsar Peter I the Great. During the Great Purge Lefortovo prison was used by NKVD for interrogations with torture. Lefortovo was a famous KGB prison and criminal investigation isolation ward in the Soviet Union for the detainment of political prisoners. In 1994 it was transferred to MVD and in 1996 it was handed back to secret police FSB, a successor of the KGB.

I begin to teach my girl to drive next week.  She said I should be scared but I wasn't until I opened this thread.  Any more pointers?  She did get her DL with the courses 2 years ago but never drove since.

It was the Lefortovo tunnel, and the accidents happened because in winter the ice and water from the cars and buses freeze up to make an invisible layer of ice on the road. In such conditions a small mistake is enough for any driver to have a crash, and the miracle is the number of cars that pass without problems...

Personally I would never drive in St:Petersburg! I have never seen such a crazy traffic situation before!

Here is one of the example  ;)

Almost all accidents were the result of a car being 'hidden' from sight by other cars.
And of course the Russian habit not to react on those three-coloured street decorations.  ;D

Maybe so, but after some taxi rides in that city I am not surprised at all over the amount of accidents in the city! I think the worst ride was the ride to the airport on my last trip. That taxi driver could have a promising career in formula one ;)

Not sure there... last time we were in Moscow we got a ride to the airport from a guy who was an actual racing driver...  :whirling:

They say you have better odds of having a lethal accident on your drive to the airport than on your flight in a commercial airliner.  Probably even more true in Moscow.

On two separate trips to SVO, I've watched the side view mirrors of the car I was riding in hit (and be broken by) a car riding along the right side of us (we both were traveling about 50MPH);  and enjoying a leisurely 10+ mile ride driving on a sidewalk at 30MPH.   :o

Conner, I've been on that same sidewalk!  Just barely wide enough to hold all 4 wheels on it.

So when you get in an accident and the ambulance comes to take you to the hospital, you've got a good chance of survival right?  This guy might disagree...

By the way, I recently upgraded my wife to the "new" car ... When we got married, I followed some advice I'd read somewhere, and got her an older car (you know, in case she drives into parking meters, etc .. :) ) Two years ago I got myself a new car. Well just a couple months ago, I was watching my wife pull out of the driveway in the "old" car, and that guilt hit me. She hadn't run into anything in over a year ..  LOL ...

So, I made the switch. Now I drive the old car, and she drives the new car. She was delighted, as you can imagine. :)

This topic just gives me shivers remembering my experience. Rather than go into a long detailed explanation, send your RW to professional driving school here EVEN IF she has a FSU license. During my ex RW's first exam, the examiner remarked please keep her off the roads here until she has more experience. He practically wanted to kiss the ground when he came back from the test with here. I still can't stand to ride with her. I'd rather walk then let her drive a car with me in it.

The second driving test the examiner remarked that Russia doesn't yet host a F1 Grand Prix so what is your hurry? She actually was SPEEDING during the driving test! I told her at least a million times that two times you shouldn't speed in life for sure; near the police and during your driving test! Of if it came from my mouth, it is advice to be ignored but if her Russian friend Luda said it then it was the gospel from St. Peter himself!

Just for the sake of full disclosure, I am not biased against RW but when it comes to driving they typically are terrible. Not all of course the but exceptions are very rare.  I worked for several years part time as a driving license examiner for a pretty large state to so I have an idea of what I am talking about. Russians?Ukrainians and Hmong where the ones I dreaded the most...
Take time to learn the language. Even a little can go a long ways...

Get off your butt and go! Don't make excuses why you can't do it, find a way to make it work! Always go with a backup plan too!!!

My wife has not yet developed a sense of speed.  She doesn't know whether she's speeding up or slowing down.  Takes turns too fast.

Also, if she's approach the driveway from one direction, she does okay, but let her approach from the other direction and she can't come in straight.  Tonight her son who saw her struggling with lining up straight in the driveway went downstairs and told his mom to let him park the car.

Her son, btw, took to driving like a fish to water.

I guess I was the opposite from RW on my driving test. The examiner actually asked me to speed up  :D
Well my driving instructor also felt that I was driving slow, until one time he said he was in a hurry to pick up another student. I changed my usual style to a more speedy one, using my interest and knowledge of car racing. He never told me he was in a hurry again.  :P
