Ukraine Travel alerts
« on: August 13, 2008, 07:00:51 PM »
Hi all!  I havn't posted here for what seems like forever, but here it goes;  my wife and daughter are in Ukraine right now and I'm kind of worried.  I looked up the consular information in case of an emergency ie. Russian invasion.  Here it is if you need it-

Embassy's American Citizens Services Unit- (044) 490-4445 or 490-4422

US Embassy in Ukraine:
10, Yuriy Kotsyubynsky St.
01901 Kyiv, Ukraine

Consular Section:
6, Mykola Pymonenko St.
01901 Kyiv, Ukraine

US Citizen 24 Hr. Emergency- +38044-490-4000

You can register online with the State Department so that if there is a problem, they can call you while in Ukraine and tell you what to do.  Here is the web address-  travelregistration.state.gov/ibrs/ui/

I hope none of this is needed, but better safe than sorry....

Wouldn't that kind of be like the United States invading Canada?

No, not at all.  You need to read the news.  Ukraine is in the cross hairs of Russia right now.  It could be like another Georgia. Things are pretty tense right now.
When in doubt, run!!!!!!!

Cut me a little slack, I'm being sarcastic.  I read The Economist every week.

I don't really think they're ballsy enough to try a military annexation of Ukraine.  It's just over the top.

On the other hand, Ukraine's military is no match for Russia's, and the Czechs can refresh our memory that their fellow Europeans will express their "outrage" but not do anything about it.

A lot of my friends in Ukraine are very worried specially the ones in Kiev.  Seems like the news on television there is making Russia out to be very bad.  Russia people tend to worry a lot and are suspicious of everything.  I think most people on this board now that.  They also tend to believe what Russian / Ukraine news tell them.

Russia may take over Ukraine peacefully in next president election or will raise gas prices to bankrupt Ukraine.  They can take Ukraine peacefully.  It will happen unless someone besides the USA gets involved.  Next two USA presidents will be very weak on foreign affairs just like Clinton.  They will be popular in the USA as they will focus on the USA but the World affairs will get worse.  Clinton was great for the USA but made a mess out of middle east.  Reagan and Bush Sr knew how to keep them fighting each other.

Regarding recessions.  Its natural and healthy for them to happen. The clever people become very rich during them.  The book smart people blame Bush.  Economies cannot always grow fast.  World is growing too fast and needs to slow down.

There are many in Crimea who would welcome Russian annexation.  Realistically, with Crimea as an autonomous republic and Russia's recent political challenges of whether it belongs to Russia or Ukraine, as well as the strong Russian military presence there and geographical isolation, it would be a natural first step in reclaiming Ukraine.
