Naturalization and timeline with name change
« on: August 21, 2008, 07:18:20 PM »
Finally we have completed the final step in the long immigration process.  My wife applied for naturalization before the removal of residency requirement process was complete.  I mailed it to be there one day after she met the 3 year of residency requirement.  The uscis website has the process taking about 1 1/2 years.  One thing she needed to do differently was a name change.  Just one letter in her name was translated incorrectly which of course meant all her other legal documents had to be spelled incorrectly.  Lilija instead of Liliya.  It seems this change put her in another process with different timelines.  Instead of the normal time it only took 5 months.  Then all her legal documents like drivers license, social security, etc will now need to be changed.

Is it a proper assumption that it was the name change that put her application into another process or has the system speeded up their processing times?  I believe everyone in the room (81) had name changes to process and the naturalization ceremony was in federal court where the judge approved the name changes.  This occurred in Portland Oregon, today.  So my wife is now a United States Citizen, hurray!  Just two more years and her 19 year old son can apply and we will be finished with immigration.

Thanks to all who helped out at this site.  I hope my infrequent comments helped out others.
