Hummmmm... I think you meant 'decibels', or db's, that would describe amplitude, not pitch or frequency, that would be in octaves. However, the dynamic range of my Mk1, Mod 0, human ear is not great enough to determine how many db of sound pressure these bugs can produce, although I'm sure it is measurable.  Guessing in the range of 90db.

They're still not as loud as what we have by our house.  There is a feeder stream and wetland not far from my back deck, and in the spring we have the loud "QUACK QUACK QUACK" of many frogs looking for love.  They sound more like ducks than frogs.

Maybe they should try the Internet?  :P

(edit: Anyone notice that I got the thread back on topic?)  ;)

Are you perhaps referring to a "katydid", the large noisy insect we have each summer? If not I'm still confused.

I'm sorry-wrong word. the first word is basicly another word for grasshoppers. I think the word I'm looking for was a southern term for for askew.crooked etc.. and I think it sounded something like  kitty wompass -something like that (damn these 16 hour shifts are killing me, I can barely remember my own name).

Actually, "catty-cornered" is a good word, not just Texian.

Another Texas/RW related thing that's going here on right now.

I live right smack dab in the center of a hummingbird migration route.  These little guys are preparing for the  long flight over the Gulf of Mexico to their winter home in Yucatan.  I have three feeders hanging on the patio which have to be refilled every other day.  My RW wife had never seen a hummingbird before she arrived here.  She delights to see about 150 or so teenie tiny birds swarming the feeders all day long.  They look like a bunch of over grown mesquitos as they fight over the right to be next in line to the nectare.

At this rate I'll have to take a second job to provide for all those extra mouths to feed.

Since this thread was handed to me, and I love to go off topic, allow me to further broaden your horizons a bit.

Language archeology is a hobby of mine.  They study modern languages and compare it with old, but still spoken, same named tougues in isolated places, i.e., the French spoken in modern Paris compared with the french crejole spoken in New Orleans.  New Orleans, LA. has been disconnected from Paris for over two hundred years, so the french spoken there is a archeological tie to the past. It has not evolved with present day needs, they have English for that, so the old language, 250+ y.o. French is perserved.  Academics need this kind of information to accurately translate old texts.

The same holds true for modern Spanish spoken in Spain when compared to Tex-Mex Spanglish, ours is an older version of Spanish, plus it is married to our terrible south Texian English, we butcher both languages with equal opportunity.

So when I talk about how many languages I speak, I always throw in pig latin to cover all the bases, but in truth, with all the variations of dialects, natural abberations, etc, I probably can converse and be understood in about six different linguistic forms.  If you throw in a smattering of bedroom Japanese left over from my Navy days,,, seven languages.

If you are interested in the English language, I'll recommend two of my favorite books...both by Robert MacNeil:

1) Wordstruck
2) Do you speak American?

If you have not seen these, you'll love them!

"Smack Dab" & "Catty Corner" are also commonly used in Missouri, and I expect most of the mid-west.  "Coke" (as a beverage) however only referes to the brand name product.

I know both books, they are worth reading, to say the least.

Mostly here, we say "pop", or simply. "soda",, sometime, "soda-pop".  It can mean a Coke-a-Cola, or any other common soft drink. I've often had someone offer me a "coke" and then hand me a Dr Pepper or a Pepsi.

The rules are pretty loose down here.
