HELP!!! Ok, I'm not very computer savvy even though I work on medical computers all day. We have a russian cd that is for studying english. I'm not sure how to properly make my pc read russian. I've tried to follow instructions but .....@#$$$#@%$^^^ , I just can't make it work. All I see is a bunch of aeiou'''''   and so on. If any of you know, please give me step by step instructions. My fiance would greatly appreciate it and if I knew you better, I'd love you to. Thanks!!

I'm running XP-Pro so it ought to be about the same.

#1 Click on "Start"
#2 Click on "Settings"
#3 Click on "Control Panel"
#4 Click on "Regional and Language options"
#5 Open the "Advanced Tab" and select which languages and fonts you want the computer to display.

Good luck

Some links :

Russify everything : http://www.siber.com/sib/russify/

Russification windows 2000 ( and other version ) : http://www.learningrussian.com/checkpc.htm#2000

Full Russification (Cyrillic becomes System Code Page) lets you see normal Cyrillic letters in file/folder names; in interface (menus, dialogs, etc.) of some Russian program, lets you input Russian text in programs where it was not possible, etc. http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/PaulGor/full_e.htm

Are you also going to get a English/Russian keyboard. At the moment I am using a Chinese/English keyboard. One that my son bought for me when we were in China. We had our mind set on visiting a computer store when we were in Moscow but we ran out of time yet I see them for sale all over the Internet.

For quick keyboard entry try doing run then in the box type osk (for onscreen keyboard) it will change the keyboard layout and characters when you change languages.

You can find the file and create an icon on your desktop if you want.

Is quicker than using a real russian keyboard since I can't touch type russian..

Thanks for all the help. It works fine now.  Bruno, those were some good sites you sent. Thanks. Yes, I have been searching for an eng/rus keyboard. Val bought one in Ukr. before she came but forgot to pack it. I searched on e-bay for one but most of those are shipped from GB or believe it or not , Ukr. I'd just as soon buy one in country. They also had those little stickers you can apply to the keyboard but they come with a disclaimer that they may not last long or stick very good. For $2.95 I was considering giving them a try. Any other leads out there you have found other than e-bay for locating eng/rus keyboards?

Great find, Dan.  I've been looking for a "true" Russian multimedia keyboard to replace my old Micro$oft one.

Years ago I bought a program for about $30 from www.cyrillic.com. It comes with several preprogrammed keyboard layouts, but you can basically make any key type any letter you want. I personally prefer the one that maps most of the roman keys to their cyrillic equivalent a=a, s=с, d=д, f=ф. because I don't have the time to be learning another keyboard layout. I can type just as fast in Russian as in English this way. It has served me well. Plus I don't have to buy those little key stickers. Just have to remember things like q=я and w=ш! Piece of cake.

I bought a set of the keyboard stickers quite a few months ago before Elena came and they've been great for her writing letters and emails home. I highly recommend these guys.

What I don't like about stickers for your keyboard is that they always cover
up the home keys. F & J. When I go to delouse her computer. I bring my own
keyboard and mouse.

Back when in the olden days when I actually chatted with FSUW, I would use
a phonetic keyboard.

You would type in A, B, V, D, Z, K, M, N, O, P, R, S, T, U, F: Direct phonetic equivalents
G for example maps to "г" but soon after Google Translate started getting good. Before
then the translators really sucked.

When I met Angel Eyes, I would type what I wanted to say into Google Translate, then
read the transliteration to her in my crappy Russian with my terrible accent. My Russian
has become considerably worse since Angel Eyes came to the US. My English is worse
as well.

I use far too much Rushglish, tend to drop the articles just like she does and I reformat
the way I say things using words that I know she knows, or worse I incorrectly call them
what she calls them. E.G. Q-tips are steeeks for ears.

Her English is getting better and mine is getting worse. One of the members here told me
it would happen, he was right.

FSUW are not for entry level daters
FSUW don't do vague
FSUW like a man of action. Be a man of action
If you find a promising girl, get your butt on a plane.
There are a hundred ways to be successful and a thousand ways to f#ck it up
Just kiss the girl, don't ask her first. Tolerate NO excuses!
