The most fun you can have with your RW!!!!
« on: November 10, 2008, 06:24:45 AM »
My wife and I have been rolling in laughter all night.

Our son (4 weeks old today by the way) was having a bit of a restless period when I got home from work so I took him from her and was walking through the house singing nursery rhymes.

Try this with your wife and see if you have as much fun as we did:

You:  "Old McDonald had a farm, E, I, E, I, O. And on that farm he had a [name an animal], E, I, E, I, O. With a..."

Your wife: *get her to add the animal sounds here*

Repeat - Repeat - Repeat

We went through cow, pig, horse, chook (chicken if you're not an Aussie), kangaroo, bird, dog, cat, etc...  and the noises she made for most of them were completely hilarious.

OK, now...  after neither of you can stand it any more throw here a curve ball...

You:  "Old McDonald had a farm, E, I, E, I, O. And on that farm he had a fish - E, I, E, I, O. With a..."

Now just watch your wife's reaction.

OK... now that newbies must be wondering what the hell I'm going on about - let me just say there are so many pleasures... so many wonderful little differences... and so many little surprises after you marry a FSUW, that this journey is really one that deserves serious planning, attention and commitment.

I'm sure anyone married to a FSUW will testify to the incredible life we lead as a result of our wives unique contributions to our lives.

In another thread I just had a rant about a member who is obsessed with his member...  but my real reason for visiting tonight was to share some of the joy of marriage to a wonderful girl!

What a woman!   :couple:

Maybe others have examples of the little differences that give you much joy...

Kuna, I can relate to this topic. I remember a time Marina and I were together in a car driving to the Grand Canyon after our wedding in Las Vegas. A group called "Three Dog Night" came on the radio and was singing "Jeremiah Was A Bull Frog". During the song I would make a frog sound like: "Eribit, Eribit". Marina went into hysterics. Come to find out, Russian animal sounds are so much different than ours. We went down the whole list of animals, cows, horses, pigs, chickens.... etc. etc. It was a great drive to the Grand Canyon.

GOB...  hmmm...  do you mind if I call you GOB?  Anyway,  we HAVE TO make recordings of this and get it on the web somewhere...  it's the funniest thing ever.

Onomatopoeia (also spelled onomatopœia, from Greek: ονοματοποιΐα) is a word or a grouping of words that imitates the sound it is describing, such as animal noises like "oink" or "meow", or suggesting its source object (these are the more important ones), such as "boom", "click", "bunk", "clang", "buzz", or "bang". The word is a synthesis of the Greek words όνομα (onoma, = "name") and ποιέω (poieō, = "I make" or "I create") thus it essentially means "name creation", although it makes more sense combining "name" and "I do", meaning it is named (and spelled) as it sounds (e.g. quack, bang, etc.).

Onomatopoeic words differ across languages because they always have to conform to some extent to the broader linguistic system they are part of.

In the case of a frog croaking, the spelling may moreover vary because different frog species around the world make different sounds: Ancient Greek brekekekex koax koax (only in Aristophanes' comic play The Frogs) for probably Rana ridibunda; English ribbit for species of frog found in North America; English verb croak for Rana temporaria.

When I was a kid, I was rather puzzled by some of the 'sounds' I saw in the balloons of Walt Disney's comics. For instance, a SIGH to an Italian sounds SIG, not SYE, and was unpleasantly reminiscent of "Sieg Heil !" ;).

IIRC, the German for bells tolling is an unsurprisingly militaristic bing, bang :(.
