Russian Wife....American Music
« on: December 07, 2008, 06:47:45 AM »
I am curious. Does anybody else have a Russian Wife that likes to watch the CMT channel? My wife has been here in the USA going on 4 years and she cannot get enough of the CMT channel and country music. She particularly likes the female vocalists.

She DID NOT get this from me. I prefer to listen to 70's Rock.

Of course, she also has a lot of Russian Cd's.

But if I jump into her car to go somewhere, that car radio channel is almost always set to country music.

We have a rule, whoever is driving chooses the music.

With my wife it is Latin music.  I like it but not 24/7.

When driving through Tennessee this past summer, we heard some C&W.  She called it "farm music."  Made me laugh.

My Tennessee cousin had a party with live Bluegrass and whole hog BBQ.  She found that interesting but not for long (see photo).

I sometimes play blues from my youth (Jimmy Reed, Muddy Waters, Lightning Slim, etc. - yes I am old) and she has no comment.

One time as a joke I played a Hawaiian CD and explained how special and wonderful it is.   She could not restrain herself and called it kaka.  I tried to behave offended but after a few songs I broke out in laughter.  It is bad unless on a beach in Hawaii after consuming a few umbrella cocktails.

Another absolutely cool thing that we share with Tim - love for TRANCE! Vocal trance, dance trance and all kinds of trance - Grandaddy DJ, Infected Mushroom, DJ Doboy... Go to www.di.fm   That's a good website for all kinds of music like that and other styles too.

What I find reassuring is that we have many styles of music listed here. Individuality lives!

Elvira heard Billy Joel's "Always a Woman To Me" and became a fan of his. She also, to my
mild amusement, loves Creedence Clearwater Revival, especially "Have You Ever Seen the Rain?"
Matchbox 20, Pink Floyd and a few other groups I cannot recall right now.

She basically dislikes my blues, and Simon & Garfunkel play "funeral music"....

Fusion jazz is right up my alley, but not hers. When I have an occasional afternoon of
solitude, I'll crank up Michael Brecker, Jaco, Pat Metheny, Weather Report...when she
gets home, I switch to Chris Botti's "Italia" - she finds that one strikingly beautiful.

GoodolBoy, You have my deepest heartfelt condolences.

Ditto  ;D

We have a pretty eclectic mix around the house ranging from Beethoven (both love his 9th) to Bon Jovi, Tarkan to Techno, some blues (popping in the original recordings of Robert Johnson is pushing it - she loves the songs, but hates the recording quality) and Folk, and of course a wide range of Russian Music - Mummy Troll, Verka Serdjuchka, Lube, Disco Avaria, Король и Шут, Zemfira, and a bunch more I can't recall off the top of my head.

No Country and no Jazz  :whew:

I just gotta meet your wife! CCR and Pink Floyd? Very Cool.
Tom Hanks in Castaway: You never know what the tide may bring in.
Viking: But you still need to walk along the beach to find it.

Viking, when we were having early kitchen table discussions, the subject of civil disobedience
somehow surfaced....  so I asked her "Had you ever crossed up Soviet law when younger?"
She launched into this story about a group of her girlfriends, all about 20 at the time - gathered at
the basement apartment of a fellow male student with a reputation for collecting black market music.
They all sat in darkness - listening to Dark Side Of The Moon. Pretty mild stuff, but they were quite
concerned about being caught, exposed, and forced to bear shame.

Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez - I haven't met a Russian lady yet that hasn't asked "What IS that?"

I tried to explain The Grateful Dead to my girl.. she didn't get it... then I tried to explain The Dead Kennedys.. she didn't get that either... Same for Bob Marley, Rage, Dave Matthews and on and on... I even tried some of my Latin favs like Silvio, Cafe Tacuba, and even Molotov fell on unappreciative ears... I hope when/if she actually arrives here a few local live shows will open her up to some things.. Phil Lesh is playing New Years Eve at Bill Graham Memorial almost every year since JG died.. I usually go.. I would hate to lose that tradition.  She likes Armenian ballads and that sort of music.. I don't mind it but...

I've run into that, too, Sculpto, and found a transitional approach sometimes helps. For
instance, your girl enjoys Armenian ballads - well, maybe she'd dig Gordon Lightfoot fare.
From Gordon, you could intro her to some Dave Matthews unplugged tunes. After a few more
"steps", you've got her groovin' to Box of Rain and Truckin'......LOL. Works easier on paper I'm sure.

My 2nd trip, I brought over a Steely Dan CD, slipped it into the deck - they were all dumbfounded.
Best to break 'em in gradually.

On Halloween night in Moscow we went to a club and she did get into techno (even if it was rather generic form of techno) which suprised me.  So, there is hope.  :)  I have the feeling some of the rejection of the music I have shared with her was simply her patriotism... but I do think you have the right idea about breaking her in slowly musically..

I think we all tend to like the music that we grew up hearing or that sounds similar to what we heard when our musical tastes were developing.  While I enjoy much of the newer music, most of my favorites are those that bring back memories of a good time in my life.

Not necessarily. We may be particularly attached to music from our growing years - in my case, late 1950s and early 1960s - for their memories, but that doesn't stop one from appreciating something new or previously unheard.

I bought my very first record of classical music at 19 (Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade, possibly also influenced by its cover ;D), but I keep making new and pleasant discoveries to this day, almost 50 years later ;).
