Flying into DME
« on: December 14, 2008, 12:46:18 AM »
Hey Y'all,

I'm headed back to Russia shortly.  It will be nice to be with Lydia again.  Anyway, this time I'm flying into DME.  On my first flight, someone very kindly told me what to expect once I landed at SVO.  Could someone kindly tell me what to do and expect at DME?

Thanks much!

DME is much simpler than Spaghetti Metro (SVO). Much like any western airport, just follow the crowd from the plane and it sorts itself out.

Yes, much better than SVO.

For me the best part is Aeroexpress Train to Paveletsky Railroad Station. It is about $7.00 and takes 40 to 50 minutes.

A taxi might be OK but the traffic can often be terrible and take much longer. It for sure is more expensive.
You will need a taxi from the train station but the distance will should be shorter.
Or if you do not have too much luggage you will be near the Metro. It is the best.

I concur. Difference over SVO is like night and day. DME is a very modern airport and the last two times I was there was in the middle of some construction but it wasn't a big deal. Once was in the summer and there was zero air conditioning but the pivas were cold. If Moscow is not your final stop and you have time you catch a sight-seeing bus right from the airport or take the train into town. I never caught a cab there but it's not a problem if you need one or a shuttle. I have never been hassled by cab driver at DME. I have been politely asked numerous times. It is pretty much a given if you want a cab just go outside to the circular driveway coming in and you'll get one.

Where is your destination and what kind of lay over?

Thanks for the clues all.  My first trip through a Russian airport was much easier because of you kind folks.  Lydia lives in Lipetsk, so DME is a much better destination than SVO.  She's coming to get me.  We won't get time to visit the city at all.  We have to hurry back to Lipetsk because she works in a restaurant and must work.

Is it legal for me to drive in Russia?  It would help on the long trip back to Lipetsk if I could drive to give her an opportunity to rest.

Yes, your license is good for up to 6 months upon arrival. If you want, and have time, you can get an international license from AAA before you leave, but it's not necessary. Good luck.

Thanks very much.  I'll offer to share the driving on the highways.  Intown Lipetsk traffic is beyond insane.
