Cultural effect of grammatical gender?
« on: December 31, 2008, 10:07:18 AM »
I wonder what is the cultural effect of grammatical gender?

Perhaps it serves as a constant reminder of gender differences? Whereas a language like English, lacking grammatical gender, facilitates the blurring of the distincations between men and women?

I have no answers nor expertise on this.  Anyone?

I think it does, in subtle ways ;). Consider for instance the case of Arabic: http://www.russianwomendiscussion.com/index.php?topic=4425.msg80781#msg80781

BS, time to time I also make such slip of the tongue. Please ask your wife if it is because of a sound association  between "he" and "her" . I caught myself on such association.

I'm so sorry for slip of the pen, of course I meant BC. (and that is again about a sound association)

Just roll in the sand afterwards, that should give you enough traction ;D.

and then the people will be curious about my age watching how the sand flakes off me   :o

We have in Russia a saying "She/he is so old that the sand flakes off her/him"
