My wife had never tried BBQ chicken wings before arriving here, but it was love at first taste. For the next week, every time I arrived home from work it was BBQ chicken wings for dinner. After about the fifth night in a row, I was like, "please God, NO MORE!"

Robert and I love Carrabbas too  :)

We eat at Carrabbas a couple times a month; there is one 12 blocks away.

However, we like Johnny Carinos equally well, and they are open for lunch.    http://www.carinos.com/

My wife (Marina) likes Chinese restaurants.

We have A LOT of them here in Miami and we have been to SEVERAL.

First she tries the different types of soups. Then goes for the different main dishes ( chicken, pork, seafood... etc.). Then she finishes up with the watermelon.

She loves sweet watermelon.

When I took Marina on one of my business trips to San Francisco, we found some REALLY GREAT Chinese restaurants in Chinatown.

For those contemplating a trip back to Ukraine in the future, McDonalds has addded wings to the menu (apparently testing the reception) with a couple of sauce choices (none of which involve mayonaise).  They are available in 4 pc or 6 pc boxes.  Fried shrimp was tested through the spring and summer season in a similar fashion.

What I'd really like to see them add is breakfast!  Seems weird to go there at 9 AM and have to settle for a burger, rather than eggs, sausage, pancakes or biscuit.  I usually settle for cereal in the room and that instant nescaffe coffee  :D

OK, as we prepare to return to the states for a long holiday (5 weeks) I am working on a major high priority list, the one with places she HAS to eat while we are there. Does anyone have any suggestions on places I should consider?  I will be in Memphis-Nashville, TN; Boise, ID; New Orleans, LA and (maybe) Orlando, FL.  We will be road-tripping from Memphis to NO and probably then on to Orlando but flying to Boise. So, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated since I may have forgotten or overlooked some spots or some companies may be out of business by now.

And HEY!, if you have some particularly JUICY anecdote about your wife's US eating experience, warnings, service, culture, disaster or just plain comedy how about sharing it?

So far, I am planning on a Cracker Barrel breakfast being her first sit-down US meal just to set the pace.  MMMMM, GRITS!, apples, country-fried steak, pancakes, biscuits (double-order), eggs (OL), preserves, oooooooooooooooo.......   :P :clapping:

We are in Orlando now. Have a friend who lives here and gave us an inside on a new J-Alexanders. Oustanding! service, food atmosphere and middle of the road pricewise. They are not too busy yet so no waiting..but they do look like it won't be long for the wait. It's 2 blocks S of sandlake Road off I-4. We liked it so much we went twice!

One distinct abberation from most FSUW I know is that she won't touch sushi.  She says the idea of someone touching everything and then not cooking it doesn't sit well with her.

LOL! Now that gives me a good tale to tell! I remember the 1st time I stayed with her in her city in an apartment we rented together. We went to the market and bought beef...and she bought fish(Yuck I hate fish). We got back to the apartment and she gets the fish out. I see her cutting a few pieces and wait for her to start cooking. NOPE! Yikes, she started eating it. OMG!

Fast Foward 3 years. We are at a fancy restaurant in Ft. Lauderdale and she doesn't know what to order. Their special was top notch seared tuna. Well darling...I'm sure you will like this!

Well...the waiter sets this nice looking piece of fish in front of her. She takes 1 bite and HOY! Here no cooked! The restaurant graciously took it back and she had a wonderful stuffed fish dish.Turns out the fish she bought was smoked salmon...looked raw to me! :D Lesson learned...don't always trust what you think something is!

She'll be fine and catch on eventually. I did in Russia. Actually most Russians I have social contact with all have good senses of humor. If she is determined to stick to fish she'll never have to go hungry. As you might remember there is a catfish house about every 2 miles in any direction from Memphis to NO to Orlando.

What is the deal with Boise ID?

Russians do have great humor although I don't understand or catch some of it.

We were at the dacha sitting outside eating lunch with my MIL. The mosquitos and flies are doin their thing. I'm fanning em off and one finally lands on my plate. Well...I tripple my fanning speed shooing it away and my MIL looks at me and says MEAT! :D

I've commented more than once that the dried fish that my wife likes looks like something that was washed up on the beach and left in the sun for three days.  Just watching her tear that dorsal fin off with her teeth makes me cringe.

For some reason everytime I go to the beach there is someone who will insist that I eat one of those dried shriveled anchovies or whatever they are, seemingly certain that THIS time, I will like it.

I swear the love of fish is in the slavic gene.  Italian cooking is also at the top of the list for them (and everyone else, or so it seems).  At the bottom will be Indian and Mexican (though my wife likes quesadillas).

Good News then!

Got breakfast on the menus during this last summer.  You can now get blini-style pancakes (not American style - YET), egg mcmuffins, big breakfast, sausage patties, hash browns and scrambled eggs.

I thought we were done with those dried up, shriveled up fish.  She ate them all the time at the black sea.  Sure made her mouth stink to me!

But a new "russian store" opened a few blocks from us this week, and guess what?

They have them  :o

That IS good news.  MIL's flat is just a few blocks from two McDonalds, and next visit I can have a simple, American style breakfast.  Wow!

For lunch I'll have the usual assortment of salads MIL puts on the table, but at least I can have my eggs and coffee for breakfast :-)

I have a hard time with chopping a fish instead of a nice fillet.  I got that point across finally.  I said she can make better soup with the remaining fish, if we fillet.

I do not mind the little fish but it is mind over matter.  Still feel they are bait, I am going to try the ones I got in Russian Deli yesterday.  They were in a can, and not dried.

Also the use of the bait fish and carp is not my favorite.  Reminds me of eating blue fish.  It is comfort factor I am sure.  I would rather eat striper, flounder, cod, mahi, tuna, salmon, trout, snapper, grouper.

Pickeral and perch are never and I repeat never staying in the boat to eat.

Catfish- Blue or Spots stay.  Channel or "pouter" variety go back.

Shrimp, crab and crayfish are good compromise too.

The Tuna and Salmon are a compromise that we are both happy with.  I will try my best cooking the others and see how they respond.

After my first 1.5 weeks in UA I was missing a fairly normal American breakfast.I had a very difficult time finding a restaurant open early that served eggs. Decided was time for an Egg MAc Muffin. Went to the MD , walked right up, asked for one, woman at counter looked at me very funny, looked up to see if it was named something different when the realization set in , "No eggs this morning".
