Social Security Card
« on: October 24, 2005, 04:39:22 PM »
Hello Everyone.

I have a question and seek some help. My fiance is here with me in Georgia and we are planning to marry next month. I wanted to know what is the procedures in getting her a social security card. I was informed by other Russian women filred at the social security office with in 2 weeks from arriving here in the US  under a fiance visa. When I called social security office they have informed me that my Lady needs a work permit first. Then I challenged them on the phone and they say that some Visa have a different code.

I have also been informed by other women that it would be better to go directly to the SS - office in person. The questions are: Can my Fiance get or apply for her ss card before we get married?? Or is this one of those things where they tel you something different until you go to the office in person???.

Any Help wouyld be appreciated on this.

Thanks

SalsaUno,

I can tell you about our recent experiences. My then-fiancee arrived in JFK, and she was able to get her K1 visa "work autorization" stamp on her I-94 form at the US customs (USCIS) office there. It takes some time for her information to get transfered from the USCIS into the computer system that the Social Security office uses. I knew this, but still went to the local office about two days after she arrived.

She applied, showing her K1 Visa and passport. Her information was not yet in the system, so the clerk told us that she had to send for authorization at the local USCIS office, and that my then-fiancee would get the card in the mail.

Sure, enough, two weeks later her card arrived with the stamp that she was only allowed to work for the lenght of time stamped on her I-94 form.

After we were married, about a month after the card arrived ( - there was still time greater than 2 weeks before the K1 expired - this is important - if there is less than two weeks left, I have heard the Social Security office will not process anything else until the EAD (Work Authorization) form is processed - ) we took our certified marriage license to the same Social Security office, to have my wife's last name changed to mine.

This is the first step in the process of establishing her new identity with your lsat name, it is needed for driver's licenses and bank accounts. The clerk at the Social Security office took her information (and her old card) and told her that a new card with her new last name, would be sent to her in two weeks. She received the new card - also stamped with work authorized as per the I-94 form - about ten days later. This happened within the last 15 days for us, so it is fairly recent information.

All the forms are in the local Social Security office, and you simply fill them out there. It has been relatively easy for us, but I have also heard that sometimes it is more difficult. If you have trouble, just go to a different office.

Wait until she wants to get a drivers license.

Another barrage of documents and red tape and maybe a long wait until she can take her driving test. SSA is easy by comparison.

Whats the issue with the drivers licenese?

I presumed she just needs to take the written test, get a permit, and eventually take the test like anyone else...

Kevin,

Check the rules in your state. Elena could not even take the Learners Permit test until she had her EAD card. She also needed proof of residency which for us was a bill in her name with our address and our lease document with her name on it.

Hello Voyageur.

I'm sorry for the delay in my response and I thank you for your reply. Yes, I went to SS# office with My Fiance and got the SS# card , however it says not valid for work with out the I94 stamped so I guess we now have to wait till we submit all documents to have thie corrected or new card.

Thanks

Salsa,

If I remember correctly, the fine folks downtown under the gold dome will not let you get a driver's liscence  in Georgia w/o SSN.  HOWEVER-if you and her go down to the local SS office in person, there is a specific form (can't remember the #) that they will give you to fill out. This will enable her to get a liscence w/o official SSN.

Also, according to my bank, no bank account w/o SSN-- unless you have this same form. I guess Sonny wants to keep all the illegal immigrants walking with pockets full of money.

BTW- I am about 40 miles west of you, as the crow flies. Hopefully I have my lady here in the spring.

Nice to here from you and thanks for the reply. Well we went to ss# local office and got a ss# card , so when she is ready to take the test for drivers permit , hopefully eberything will be fine. Yes, we will wait till she gets her Drivers permit of license and go down to the bank & open an acount. We live in Griffin Georgia and hope you and your Gal do great once here in Ga. and everything goes great. If your gal is more or less like others I have talked to and met here in Atlanta, then let me know so I can give you some tips on hopw to make her feel almost as home with the food items she will most be interested in.

Thanks
