Transport of animals
« on: February 27, 2009, 05:49:32 PM »
Has anyone dealt with the issue of bringing your ladies pet into the country ?  My Tatyana would love to bring her cat with her. I know there is a strong bond between  her and her pet. I believe it would be a good thing and could help her in the adjustment phase when relocating to Pennsylvania.
I am in the stage of visa application near completion. Tatyana has completed her part and I should have her translated documents shortly for the package.
Also , I will sing the high praises of Anastassia Ash. Her services have been invaluable. She has spent hours on the phone with Tatyana answering all of her many questions. Tatyana felt a bit overwhelmed by all the documentation needed, but with the help and advice of Anastassia Ash, my Tatyana is now a woman "on a mission."
I am hopeful she may be here for Thanksgiving and definately for Christmas.

Hello Jake,

I'm getting ready to deal with this myself. My fiancee Natasha has a cat she wants to bring with us to America. We are in the final stage and waiting for her visa interview in Moscow.
I checked with Delta and they want $550.00 to check an animal in as checked baggage. I just got back from Moscow last weekend and I saw a girl with a dog on the plane and I immediately called Delta about this upon my return and they said oh yeah, you can bring it as a carry-on for $150.00 if there are only two animals on the flight. So I think this is the way we will go about it.
I've checked all other possible rules and regulations and there are none for cats. A dog must have rabies vaccination according to the CDC.

Good luck.

Before boarding the flight at SVOII they sent us to the vet upstairs for final clearance although we had the appropriate certificates from her local vet.  Yes a mistake here and there were found and 'corrected' for a small fee.. LOL

Yes, be sure you book the pet at the same time you do.  Two pets per plane of different species rule and these are often booked well in advance.  You may not get the dates you desire.

I took my dog home with me, in the cabin, on Delta, from Moscow to JFK. You must confirm that the flight you will be on will permit animals. Not all do and sometimes it depends on the season. I did this in September. And the cabin is limited to only 2 animals. The animal must fit under the seat. I used a soft carrier and it worked very well. I think they charged me $50 or so as my dog was considered carry on luggage.

Animal control in SVO can be a bit*h so make sure all paperwork is completed and accurate and give yourself some time to go through this procedure. Not to mention a few extra dollars as well. My Tasha was a pup from a private breeder so they did all the paperwork for me.  Since my dogs papers were all in Russian, I had no delays in NY as animal control there could not read anything and just let me go on my way! But there is a chance of quarantine.

I thank the stars she was quiet the whole trip, and being a pup many passengers wanted to pet her, although the flight attendents did frown upon this.

Good luck and let me know if you need any other info.

Just curious, but how does a dog handle their "business" on a 9+ hour flight?

Most dogs won't do their business while in a carry kennel. In fact thats the quickest way to house train them.

Well, being a puppy she was wearing a "bumper" (diaper). And I did need to make a visit or two to the restroom to change them. She did require, like anyone else, some liquid during the flight. Fortunately she was not fed any solid food the day of the trip. I agree with Connor about kennel trainig, but in this case she was too young to understand. However, when we tried it at home when she got older it just did not work. Most Black Russian Terriers dislike cages or kennels and she was a lot happier going outside early on.

Would you care to explain these certificates and paperwork. Is this something that Russia requires before a pet is taken out of the country? What does it consist of?
So there is a vet at SVO to look at the pet?
I will be doing this soon and I don't want any surprises on the day we leave.
If you can explain a little more I would be thankful. :)

There is no vet at the airport. Just an administrative ex-KGB Nurse Cratcett who gave me a hard time. I can't directly answer your question since my pup was purchased and being taken out of the country and I had to show ownership, vet stuff to show she was inoculated and in good health. I think you might find it helpful to have these type of papers as well. Maybe the vet in Russia might have a better handle on it.

When we brought my wifes cat from Ukraine in December we were given a whole long list of things we would need to do. Of course shots required by CDC.  The airline said they would require that he have either an identification tattoo or ID chip, we went the ID chip (by the way they never asked about it at any of the airports.

The only place they looked at his vaccination papers was upon arrival here in the US. He rode in cabin.  We booked him at the same time I booked the flight for the rest of the family cost was $200 on Lufthansa.  We were also told that he would need his own passport never was checked or asked for.  We did have to get a certificate to allow him to leave the country stating that he was in good health.  They got 25 grivvna for that no one ever bothered to check.

We all arrived safe and sound on December the 4th.  Only further shots he required was a feline leukemia shot when we had him neutered.
