Best way to get from Borispol to the train station?
« on: March 05, 2009, 10:33:42 PM »
Hi Gang,

Every time I fly into Borispol I'm set upon by the aggressive cabbies and end up paying their exhorbitant (American-scale) rates.  Is there a better way to get to the train station?

Just as an amusing -- at my expense! >:( -- war story:  once I flew into Borispol and planned to take the bus to Zaporozhye.  I surrendered to the cab driver, who took me to the bus station where I waited for 2 hours for the next bus to Z ... finally got on it and lo and behold its first stop was -- ta da! -- at Borispol!  Man, that cabbie must have had a good laugh.

TIA,
Steve

WB, those taxi drivers are working on the assumption that travelers know nothing of legal rates. For a licensed taxi the highest fare (they're posted) they can charge from the airport into the city centre of Kyiv is $30. And that is higher than you should negotiate.

Simplest: There is маршру́тка (Marshrutka/minibus) service that runs every 15 minutes either way from Boryspil to the central Railway Station. Cost is very cheap, around $4 in UAH. That way you avoid having to get to the Metro and then navigating from green to red line and getting off at the correct station.

Thanks, Mendeleyev!  That's perfect -- I've ridden on the Marshrutkas (marshrutki, I should say), and I like them.  $4 in UAH is great -- so about 4 * 7.8 hriven?  (I think that's the current conversion)

That's a great one...  heh.. I think most of us have been in a similar situation at least once.

Here's one of my favorites... not about a cabbie but a helpful gentleman.  I got myself a little lost on my first trip to Odessa when prowling around alone for the first time.  I got my lady on the phone but I had no idea exactly where I was to be able tell her, so I did the best I could with nearly zilcho Russia at the time.. I stopped this man and Asked "Gdye ya??? Gdye ya???"  (where I? where I?)... and with a perfectly straight face, he pointed his finger at me and said "Vot!" and kept walking as I naively said "Spacibo!"... so for the next minute or so I argued with my lady that I am at "Vot" and to come meet me at "Vot" -- with her cackling like a nut on the phone... ahhh, the joys of being an idiot.

Did it ever occur to give the man the cell phone and let him explain to your lady where you were?  Just askin.

Oh, it is fun to watch.  I was in the airport and this cool Aussie was on my flight.  It was snowing, and he had a driver suppose to pick him up.  I told him they will most likely be late.

Well there is some drivers, but none had his name.  I have a friend that works at the airport, so he asked around.  Nobody to be found, it was like 8.30 am.  He is a little worried.  We waited 30 minutes, to see if it was just the traffic.

I said, well lets go to the international terminal.  See if the driver is there.  Nope, so he calls the agency at 9 am, when they are suppose to open.  I told him, good luck on that one.

Finally about 30 minutes later, he gets a hold of the agency.  The driver said he was early, and waited for him.  I said no you were not, and got my friend to come over.  My friend told him, he is a liar.  Do not mess with this American, and the drivers eyes were the size of a small Pizza.

I got that poor guy off to his flat.  I hope the rest of his trip went better.

Afternoon traffic in Kyiv can be at a standstill, so I would suggest allowing more than ample time to go to Borispol from Kyiv if doing so on the same day as your flight out.  You can take the same touring bus (Autolux) from most of the major cities in Ukraine without going to Kyiv itself.

Have someone who lives there call for a cab for you from their regular company.  They will wait wth your name on a card and take you to the station. Cost should be about 145 or so unless it is peak time.
Pick and choose carefully among the advice offered and consider the source carefully. PM, Skype or email if you care to chat or discuss
