I'd encourage all first time visitors to the former soviet union to equip themselves for the trip by learning your A, B, Cs; in Cyrillic.

Here is a link that shows how you and do so in FIVE MINUTES!  Really :-)

Once you know the alphabet, there is so much more to learn.  For you vets out there, what basic vocabulary do you recommend newbies *know* before getting on the plane?

And I do like the comment in response to the piece...

"...go to Russia, go there single, and date a Russian.
If you want to learn a language, sleep with a translator."

Man that one really cracked me up... I'm thinking that this specific reference is not referring to the Lingvo line..

Hi Simoni!

Are you asking what words they should be able to read, or which they should be able to speak? If the former, they should know:

ТУАЛЕТ = Toilet

ВХОД/ВЫХОД = Entrance/Exit

As far as which to know and say? At least:

spasibo = Thank you

(I always remembered it this way: Thank you for having a spicy butt. It sounds like that: spai-SEE-buh)

Hello = pre-vee-YET

Good-bye = duh-svi-DAHN-yeh

Yes = da

No = nyet

I love you = yah  tib-YAH  lu-BLU
