One quick question. I sent all the docs I needed for AOS and also the 131 doc for travel. I got to thinking that I only sent this for my wife. Our son is 9 yrs. old. Should I have sent an I-131 for him as well, or does he automatically get to travel with his mom? HMM...

Are you the biological father and are you traveling with them?

Sergei is listed in Elena's passport and was listed as being able to travel with her on her  Advance Parole document. I would guess that if your son is listed in mom's passport it would be the same for you.

I just looked at a copy of the application for val's I131 but didn't see a place to list her/our son. Unless he automatically can piggy back with her, it leads me to believe he needs a travel doc as well. Yes, he is on her passport . An clarification would be helpful. if i need to send one for him I'll mail one in. One other thing, they won't travel till after may, what are the chances the all thses other docs will be approved by then?

You stepson needs his own travel docs.  He arrived on a K-2 visa, she on a K-1, until he gets a GC his status is still in limbo, pending adjustment.

If he travels back to the FSU without permission to reenter he would be denied at the POE, just as your wife would be turned away without her I-131.  The K-2 visa is a single entry, just the same as the K-1.

jb,

Thanks. You came through again. I'll send his app in, in a few days. For some reason, that very thought hit me the other day. But then i wasn't sure. It will be no problem to fill the app and send it in. Thanks.

I confirm what jb wrote.  We filed (and received) an AP for my 7 yo stepson, who also arrived to the US via K-2.  Like most thing USCIS, it's always best if you file both mother and child(s) paperwork at the same time, in  the same envelope.

Conner,

Just a quick note. If you use IE (from Micro$oft), there are spell-check features built-in to the board software. In my case, I use Opera, and spellcheck doesn't work with Opera (or, I would guess, Firefox), but with IE they are available.

I filed AP for wife and son in the same envelope and his biometrics letter was not delivered but hers was. Now I have all 3 of our names on the inside of my mailbox.

I am just saying you can file everything in the same package and the USPS will choose whether to deliver the letters or not.

@ Dan -- I know, I know.  I usually use the spell checker, but it was a short post, and I didn't bother.  Then I saw I had my "i" and my "e" switched, and ... :?

@ SOC (and others) -- The practices of the USPS must depend on each person's location.  Don't have my (our) names anywhere near our mailbox, never have, never will.  And all of our mail arrives in a timely manner, regardless of the sender.

There you go again slammin' the USPS again. The USPS cannot just decide to not to deliver your mail. The only exception I can think of is if you have a vicious dog who likes his mailman ala cart on the run.  I have seen mail delivery suspended to a particular address until the resident got their dogs under control.  Til then they had to drive to the local PO to collect their mail.

Mail is the property of the addressee, the Postal Service will not withhold your property from you.

Conner,

Out of curiosity, and along the topic of the thread, does Pasha have his own passport yet?

The reason I ask is because we were told that Kolya absolutely needs to have his own passport to enter Russia once he hits his 7th birthday (Russian law, not US) and we've had a wee bit of an ordeal in making it happen while residing here. Luckily Papa knows some people downtown and was able to get the application submitted, but picking up the passport may require something creative as a parent is supposed to be the only one allowed to retrieve it when it's ready.

Very odd... my future 10 yo daughter traveled to Jamaica and had no issues getting back into Russia.  Her passport is part of her mothers.

Did you mean 17 yo?

Damn!  Sometimes I hate this forum software!  I'll try again...

First, the disclaimer:  This is my experience.  No warranty expressed or implied if it is not what happens for you.

Pasha does not have his own passport.  He is listed in his mother's.  When he arrived in the US, he was only fife (5) years old, and just had his name listed.  I understand that, at age seven (7), they can be listed in the parent's passport in name and photograph.

So this spring, we headed to NYC with two goals -- to visit the Statue of Liberty, and get Pasha's picture added to Natalya's passport at the Russian consulate.  The wait at the embassy was much worse than the long lines down at the Battery.  After Natalya forced her way into the embassy (using a 'cry on command' performance by Pasha as a battering ram), she found out what they had told her via telephone was incorrect, and that since he was already listed in her passport, she only needed to send the passport, photographs, application, and fee by FedEx, and they would have taken care of it (saving us about $1000, but we would of missed out on the NYC trip).

It was late April when we went to NYC, but the weather turned out to be beautiful for the time of year.  The ferries to Lady Liberty had long lines (and tight security) as they had just opened the island again for visitors.  But my wife was not to be dissuaded.

I asked her why it was important that we take so many pictures, thinking that it was to show friends and family that we were there.  She made me laugh when she replied, "It's so I can prove to myself that I really was here..."

Thanks Conner :) and hey, the family is looking GREAT .

Goombah, no I didn't mean seventeen I meant seven. If your stepdaughter has a picture in mamma's passport and not just a rubber stamp, that may be the difference.

Funny how each time you speak with a RW, the story seems to change a little. ;)

The Russian embassy in NY will not accept passport changes that are mailed/Fedex to them.  You can drop them off in person, and they will FedEx it back to you.  The Embassy in Washington DC possibly may accept the documents that are sent to them.  Best bet is to telephone the Embassy there direct and ask.

Hope this is better info...
