What is the best time of year to go to Russia?
« on: April 11, 2009, 09:49:27 AM »
I was thinking of going in the early fall of 2010.

Anyone know? Thanks.

I would say that very much depends on where you are thinking of going in Russia exactly.

A lot also depends on what type of weather you like.  I was perfectly happy in Tver last week in a short sleeve shirt in -4C and snow on the ground.

I would say in May but early fall is ok. Actually it depends on the area. What part of Russia?

St. Petersburg.

You can chose the weather you want yourself ;)

I've only been there in March and although there were a few nice relatively days there were a few miserable ones too.

some Russians have said to me that there are only two seasons -  Winter and mosquitoes  :o

I have been there once in the Summer, once in the Fall and once in the Spring. Ten times in the Winter. Winter can be cheaper but it depends on your tolerance for cold.

But most times you are not outside for long periods so it is not too bad. If it is your first visit and you want to see the sights I do not suggest Winter. And remember, because of their latitude they have a shorter season for warmer weather.

I second that!

I live in a subtropical climate so traveling in winter is like a bonus for me.

Your tolerance to cold is the only consideration in my mind!

I was in Omsk last year late August, early September. It was beautiful out with temps in the 80's most day. Towards the end there were a few rainy days mostly in the morning and it was already starting to get cooler.

I guess I'm a freak of nature, I was wearing short sleeve t-shirts in Moscow and Tver and was perfectly comfortable, I put on a leather jacket (to blend in) and I was sweatin my arse off!!  And I live in Texas-go figure-lol

My buddy and his wife (and neighbors) were concerned about me getting sick, the funny thing is everyone ended up with flu or colds and I never had so much as the sniffles.  Give me the cold any day of the week.

Yeah...  but you're a big unit like me...  we're made for the cold but I reckon we move quicker when we hit ice on the footpath.   :o

That's the only thing I didn't like about winter in Kiev - my (now) wife having to save my a$$ several times while I was slip-sliding my way down Mikhailskaya.

Good to see you posting again acrzybear!!!
