Addressing a Package

A quick question to all ladies and men who have a better handle on Russian than me...

I'm mailing a package to my friend Vitaly ( Виталий ). Let's say his last name is
Petrov ( Петров )....  OK, can someone add the correct endings that imply "to Vitaly Petrov"
in grammatically correct Cyrillic? I do realize the given name and surname will be reversed. Thanks.

I'm no authority, but I think one doesn't use TO in Russian addresses, and therefore names are in the nominative, i.e. Петров Виталий.

I'm hesitant to put Yoshkar Ola's postal staff to the test. In fact, I've never
sent anything there that wasn't addressed in the native language. For the
longest time, I've been using nominative case for the person named in the
address - and recently noticed that I'm alone in doing this. I asked my wife
why nobody in her family ever bothered to correct me - apparently they
not only enjoy my broken Russian but were concerned I'd take an unsolicited
correction as criticism. Hey, I know I'll never be fluent to the point I'd love to
be, but I can sure die trying...

Vaughn, do you write address in two variations: English and Russian? or just in Russian or  a "mix", for example "to Виталию Петрову"?

Nifty! S'pose someone wanted to write the address in Cyrillic but doesn't ... umm ... feel comfortable attempting to play with his rather acute lack of knowledge with the Cyrillic alphabet and language? Would someone mind helping a poor soul out in say...writing our said address for him?

Vaughn, your wife and her family are correct. According to Russian grammar, one needs to put the name of the receiver of the package/letter in the Dative Case.

Wraith, I have a solution for you.  Have the address typed and instead of writing it on the envelopes/packages, print it. If you need help typing the address in Cyrillic, PM and I will be happy to help you out.
