21 and 26, he just finished studying.

Aloe, you have just shattered my beliefs about the maturity and sincerity of 21-yo RW.  Your maturity is well beyond your years.

You are a superb example of why young AM should look to the FSU for a life partner.  Neverthless, I still believe that most RW your age are not the same as you, so a young AM will need to search long and hard to find a woman as fine as you.

I was 24 and she 21 when I first got married.   We had a lot of fun building a life together with little money.  You will too.

Are you seriously suggesting to get a second job so at the end it's possible to spend that hard earned money on entertainment of 200++ people you hardly know and probably not gonna see ever (or rarely) again?

I think I'm in love... or at least serious lust.. better watch out or I'll start throwing smetana on that fairy tail!

Kids...    :)

Anyway, I think you'll be alright, and lots the beautiful dresses will be in your life as well, just a bit later.   As for now - do a registry at Belgium ЗАГС (have no idea what they called there), put some spring flowers in your hair and you still be the prettiest bride in the world in your husband's eyes.    ;)
thanks, that's what he keeps saying, minus the flowers lol .
not sure, how to put flowers in hair tho..

Sculpto, you've gotta be kidding about sewing... :P i know only 2 people who can sew, my mom and my cousin, but they can't make a wedding dress. None of my friends can sew, it isn't something popular.

Lol I was partly kidding.. but I do find it sad that basic skills like sewing for girls and i am betting carpentry for boys are ignored.

Oh that's the easy part... a few weeks prior to the wedding, get a little potting soil (about two handfuls) and some water.. mix together and pack it snugly on your scalp.. insert flower seeds into the pack...  by the wedding day, VOILA! beautiful flowers!  ;D  I just knew my advice would be useful here someday.

Do you mean to say she will have many more marriages in future? :)

I know a few young women in Ukraine who can knit and at least one can sew as well.

The tradition of the bride carrying a bunch of flowers:
In days gone by people of Western Europe had two baths per year. One was in early spring. Most marriages were held in mid to late spring as people were still fresh from the bath. However by that time the bride used to start smelling a little so she had a bunch of flowers in her hand to mask the odor.

I'll throw in my two cents.

When I got married I was in college and worked a part-time job.  My future wife worked full-time.  We didn't have the money for a grand wedding, so we planned a wedding that fit our budget.   It was special and memorable.   My parents came and her parents didn't come because we lived so far away.  We invited several friends to come and they did.

Do what women do well.  Go shopping and find bargains!!   We found a chapel and willing minister for a reasonable price.   Then we found a bargain on a large banquet room at a downtown hotel.  We negotiated price on some appetizers (no dinner) and put money towards the bar.   After that bar money was spent it became a cash bar and guests would have to pay for their drinks.   Music was provided by a stereo we brought in.  My future wife found a bargain on a dress and I rented a tux.

Plan a wedding you can afford with no debt.   Be creative.   If you look around you can find a special place for the wedding.  In this poor economy many hotels and caterers are willing to negotiate on price.  If you have your heart set on a pretty white wedding dress there are many of them for sale second-hand - used only once.   Your future husband can buy a good suit he can use in the future or he can rent one.

When my parents married it was at the house of my aunt.   She had a large house and garden.   The family pitched in and made food for the wedding.   It was a lovely wedding.   They did it, so can you.

I know that girls from the day they are little princesses dream of their wedding day and plan their dream wedding.  Then reality sets in.   This will not be the last time you face a problem like this with your future husband.   You will always have things you would like to buy but cannot afford.  A married woman has to learn how to control the family budget and do the best she can with the money they have.

Your wedding day is only one day.  It's not a lifetime.

No, I sincerely hope that Aloe and her loved one will live happily ever after in their fairy tale that just starts with wedding vows.    :)

Well, if we are sharing budget wedding stories then here is mine - we were both living and working in foreign country.    In order to get married we needed to get tons of paperwork from 3 different governments.   Anyway, long story short - we got a call that our papers are ready on Tuesday, called all our local friends and told them - we are getting married on Friday (no time to waste, INS is waiting!   ;D ), want to do it Black Tie stile, so go and buy/rent dresses and tuxedos.    Comes Friday, we spend 4 hours in local Justice of Peace signing miles of paperwork in very-very casual clothes (and I mean - very casual  ;D ) and after that we had a wedding dinner at nice, small Hungarian restaurant.    We had about 20 people - all close friends.   Everybody was dressed up to their ability - couple of guys could only find tuxedo tops to rent, but not the bottoms, so they had shorts and white starched shirts with tux jackets...  :D   But hey, we didn't care - we had each other and we had our friends and we had fun!

None of our parents were present, unfortunately...   But we really couldn't wait, time was of the essence...

in San Francisco a second hand vintage wedding dress is actually quite an in style thing to do.  I doubt the same would hold true elsewhere.. if Aloe would even consider doing such a thing she should make sure to "purify" the dress in whatever ritual would be appropriate for her.

Looking back, I find that the fondest times were those where I and my SO didn't have a pot to pi$$ in..

Maybe it's a part of just being young..

I say go for it and instead of a wedding gown you only wear once, pick a nice dress you can wear again and again on special occasions.

Anyone have experience purchasing a ticket for their lady before going to US Embassy for a tourist visa?

Congrats 9on your tourist visa, but unless I am mistaken marrying is not going to allow you to stay. Instead you might have to go back and wait for the proper visa to arrive.
However if this happens, there might be a way around.

I will send you some links in PM that might be helpful. Forward them to your partner if he can read Dutch.  ;)

Belgium and Holland have different rules. Belgium has much less strict rules, there are quite a few people on russians in belgium forums who got married to a dutch person but had to move to Belgium to be together, cuz Holland rules suck, and their husbands just drive up to Holland for work every day :P
